BOSS Barry Winslow says his Swindon Spitfires troops have earned the right to allow themselves a bit of slack in the final week of the season after clinching the Division One title.

Spits secured their silverware with a 4-0 success at home to Core Construction last Tuesday but went on to lose their final two matches of the campaign – 3-2 at home to Chiseldson on Thursday and 1-0 away at runners-up Swindon Centurians on Saturday.

Daniel Comer’s free-kick won the points for Centurians at the weekend, with the result meaning Spits finished just a point above their rivals in the final table but Winslow won’t be taking his team to task about that.

“It’s nice to have a little break now because having four games in a week has been tough. That’s the reason we’ve dropped off a little bit,” said Winslow.

“The season should have finished by now, really. We’ve got a few players carrying injuries and it’s been hard to get a team together for the last few games.

“Once the title was wrapped up on Tuesday, a few of the players said that was it for them, they had to work this weekend or do something else. That’s fair enough. I am not going to complain about that.

“When we have got a full squad, I think we are a very good team and we deserved to be champions. I’m delighted it’s finally come to together.

“I’ve been doing it four years now and we’ve come close before. Last year, we finished second and that was a big blow because I felt like we had a team that deserved to be champions.

“For it to finally come together this time is fantastic and the players have been superb all season. It’s been a great team effort from everyone.”

Elsewhere, Ricardo Serratore scored four times as third-placed Bassett Bulldogs signed off their season with a 6-2 success away at Ramsbury. Colin Cochrane and Tom Orton were also on target for Bulldogs.

There was also a four-timer for Jason Hodson as he got all the goals for North Swindon WMC in their 4-1 success at home to Sport 4 Pinehurst.

Anthony Jones helped himself to a hat-trick as Core Construction thrashed Chiseldon 6-1. Floyd Garrett added a brace and Jamie Duggan got the other, with Matthew Clarke hitting Chiseldon’s reply.

A hat-trick from Blaine Fitzgerald was not enough to give Premier Division runners-up Avtar Construction a final day victory as they were beaten 4-3 at home by Village Inn.

Finally, bottom side Lower Stratton showed plenty of spirit in their last match of the season but they still went down 5-3 at KS Miltax.
