LOUISE Hunt’s hopes of a medal at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup were ended on Wednesday as the Great Britain women suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of hosts Japan.

World Team Cup senior debutante Luz Esperanza Merry made a good start in her match against Kanako Domori but was eventually outplayed, losing 6-3, 6-1.

Wanborough’s British number three Hunt, who is the top-ranked Brit in the team in Tokyo, was then beaten 6-1, 6-1 by world number two Yui Kamiji.

Great Britain’s fate was sealed when London 2012 Paralympian Hunt and Lauren Jones went down 6-0, 6-3 to Kamiji and Domori in the doubles rubber.

The team had earlier lost 2-1 to Thailand in their opening round of matches, meaning they finished bottom of their group and are unable to compete for a medal. Hunt and her colleagues will now play for places 9-12, starting off against Morocco today.

However, Britain’s men are still in with a shout of finishing on the podium and face Japan in the semi-finals of both the men’s and quad competitions.
