FIVE members of Phoenix Family Taekwondo made the trip to Liverpool to compete in the Global Taekwondo International’s North West Open Tournament, coming away with an impressive haul of nine medals.
Oliver Waite, aged 10, came through some formidable competition to secure his first competition gold medal in sparring, demonstrating some excellent control, ring craft, and tenacity.
He also claimed a silver medal, alongside teammates Jacob Law (12) and Travis Waite (13), in tag-team sparring, with the Phoenix team only losing out to an all-black belt team.
Travis Waite also won silver in the individual patterns division, beating his own teammate, Conor Law (15), into bronze medal position, with Law also winning bronze in individual sparring.
Club instructor John Newman came away with a gold medal in the men’s senior heavyweight sparring division and also picked up silver in black belt patterns.
Newman said: “It was a great competition for the team and I’m so proud of everyone’s efforts. I was also extremely impressed by the coaching skills displayed by Conor Law.”
