SWINDON Supermarine boss Dave Webb was delighted his team got back to winning ways with a 5-1 drubbing of Odd Down in the FA Cup preliminary round.

The hosts went into the game on the back of a frustrating 1-1 draw to Slimbridge on Wednesday night but thrashed their Western League opponents to book a first qualifying round trip to Portishead Town on Saturday, September 3.

“Obviously, it is very important that we did it right. The FA Cup it is good revenue for the club and there’s also the prestige of being in the competition,” said the Marine manager.

“We wanted to improve as a team on what we did on Wednesday we probably dropped our level a little bit although we didn’t get beat.”

Despite being comfortable at 2-0, thanks to Connor Waldon and a penalty from Brad Hooper, the home team let their lead slip as Odd Down came back into contention to make it 2-1.

After the break, normal service was resumed as Supermarine fired in another three, courtesy of an own goal, Callum Parsons and Lewis Thompson, to see them into the next round.

“We had a few words at half-time; credit to the players because they came back in the second half and ran in another three goals.

“We won the game comfortably in the end. We want to win as many games as we can to see if we can get a big club at the Webb’s Wood.

“The players were fantastic. Sometimes when you are favourites, it’s not easy but we’ve gone on and won it – credit to them.

The game also marked another goal for striker Connor Waldon, who has now notched seven times in five matches, much to the delight of Webb.

“He scored again. He took his goal well, he’s enjoying his football and that is important for Connor. He is still only a young player,” the Marine chief added.

“As a manager and a club, we are very lucky that he is with us he’s been well looked after. He wants to score goals and he’s one of the first names on the team sheet, so it’s great to see him flourish.”

Marine will be joined by Highworth Town in the next round.

Jeff Roberts’ outfit recorded a 3-0 win over Ardley United, with Keiron Gleed claiming two goals and Ryan Stanners making it three.

They will now face either Eastbourne United or Newhaven, who replay on Tuesday night following their 2-2 draw in Saturday.
