IT HAS been a turbulent few days for Royal Wootton Bassett Town after the shock departure of manager Paul Braithwaite on Thursday evening.

After two seasons in charge, Braithwaite called time on his spell as Bassett boss last week and his old team suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Binfield on Saturday.

However, striker Steve Robertson believes his side were unlucky not to come away from the game with at least a point.

“It was good performance. We probably deserved a point on the balance of it, there were no clear chances for either team,” said Robertson.

“The lad who took his goal took it really well from about 30 yards. It was pretty much unsaveable and it was the only time in the game we gave them a bit of space in and around our box.

“Given everything that has happened in the last seven days, I think the lads can pat themselves on the back.”

Robertson also thinks that the way his team performed on Saturday was the perfect remedy to their tough times of late.

“I think it helped that we were playing a game of football and not just sitting around doing nothing. To get back on the football pitch with the players who wanted to be there was helpful,” said the frontman.

“It was a grafting game. We didn’t have a lot of the ball but we had one or two half-chances where we could’ve got something out of the game.

“To be fair to Braithwaite, he called up the lads to let them know before it broke out. We spoke together as a group and said we need to stick together.”

He also now believes the team can take confidence from the game moving forward, as long as they continue to work hard.

Robertson added: “It was all hands on deck and work your socks off. We did that and we were unlucky not to get anything from the game – if we do that every week, we should be okay.

“I’ve been involved where managers have changed but I think this is the earliest it’s ever happened. It is a bit awkward but you get out what you put in.

“Fingers crossed, onwards and upwards. I think the fact we put in a good performance was important. It gave everyone a bit of a boost.”

Wootton Bassett are back in action next Saturday when they welcome Brackley Town Saints to the Gerard Butler Sports Ground.
