ON-LOAN defender Darnell Furlong reckons Swindon Town proved exactly what they are capable of in a 3-0 rout of Rochdale on Tuesday night.

Furlong, who will spend the 2016/17 season at the County Ground from Championship side QPR, set the ball rolling for Town with their opening goal midway through the first half as they ended a run of four consecutive home defeats in League One.

The win builds on Town’s confidence-boosting 0-0 draw at AFC Wimbledon and suggests they have successfully planted some seeds of recovery.

When asked if he thought the first half against Rochdale was Town’s best performance of the season, Furlong told BBC Wiltshire: “I think so. We did everything we had to; we controlled them, we stopped their threat, we knew they were going to pump it long so we had to nullify that.

“They had no other plan, so it was an excellent game plan.

“We have set certain amount of points for a certain amount of games and we are on track. We believe in what we are doing and everyone is in charge, so we are looking forward.”

Furlong’s goal would not have looked out of place had it come from the boot of his father Paul, who netted more than 50 times for both Birmingham City and QPR during his own pro career in the late 1990s and 2000s.

Furlong Snr is currently U18s boss at Loftus Road so has been instrumental in his son’s development and the Town loanee admits it is not difficult to work out where his finisher’s instinct comes from.

“I have done a few finishing sessions with him, so I am grateful,” added Furlong.

“I just took every bit of advice he’s said. Low and hard as early as possible and that was it.”

Furlong was joined on the scoresheet by Nathan Delfouneso, who latched onto a perfect defence-splitting ball from Conor Thomas to put Town two goals to the good at half-time.

The strike was Delfouneso’s first for Swindon in League One following his summer signing and after enduring a tough start to his County Ground career, Furlong is sure it will act as the catalyst for the floodgates to open.

Furlong said: “What a finish. The ball was incredible but the finish was just as good.

“That will help him out so much, getting confidence from goals and I’m sure he will kick on with more goals now.”
