SWINDON Town’s Conor Thomas says that hard work will be put in to training this week to make amends for Saturday’s poor performance against Walsall.

Two stunning strikes from Erhun Oztumer saw the visitors return to the Midlands with a 2-0 victory to their name.

Midfielder Thomas, who has been used as a makeshift centre half in recent games to plug a lack of defensive options through injury and suspension, did not look for excuses in his post-match press conference.

He admitted that the reaction of the fans, many of whom were heard booing the team at the final whistle, was warranted and that they must do more to ensure the crowd get behind them at the County Ground.

“We’re all very disappointed, the performance wasn’t good enough,” he told the local media. “We have gone from having 20-odd shots on goal to three.

“We all know it is not good enough and we’ll be in next week working hard to put it right next Saturday.

“The last two games, (we’ve had) two clean sheets and we wanted to build on that today but it just wasn’t good enough.

“The way they set up, they recovered into their shape quickly and as the game went on, we needed to give the fans something to cheer about.

“They come, they want to be able to get off their seats and we didn’t give them anything today and it’s not good enough.

“As I said, we have got to give the fans something to cheer about and that works both ways – that would lift us and we could feed of us and they can feed of us but we just didn’t give them anything today.”

While there was little either Thomas or central partner Nathan Thompson could do about either of Oztumer’s finishes, which were both taken with aplomb, that didn’t prevent the 22-year-old feeling dejected to not have a third clean sheet to their name.

He said: “It’s a great finish, even the second goal. He (Oztumer) had a very good game but we’re disappointed with two preventable goals.”
