SWINDON Town are running their eye over triallists with ‘top-flight experience’ as they prepare for next month’s transfer window to open.

When Tim Sherwood was appointed as the club’s director of football, he wasted no time in stating that fresh faces were needed to help turn things around.

The 47-year-old was also quick to identify that experience, to counter-balance the youthful nature of Town’s current crop, was required.

It would now appear the wheels are in motion to make that happen, with new faces spending time training with the club as Sherwood and chairman Lee Power attempt to fix the cracks that have been exposed in the early stages of this campaign.

“There have been players in on trial and there have been players of a very high calibre that have played at the top level,” said head coach Luke Williams.

“Of course, if they are on trial, there is a reason why they are on trial. We haven’t been able to get Gareth Bale here to trial out.

“There have been some players with top-flight experience and it is just a question of looking and thinking - can they realistically still perform and can they add to the group and a few other factors that come in to the equation.

“It is great to see players coming in on trial that have got experience and have got something potentially to offer us.”

However, as has been the case in previous transfer windows, Williams is taking a back seat in drawing up a wish list ahead of January 1.

It is a role Williams is more than happy to take and he is confident that Sherwood and Power will give him the required tools to work with on the training pitch.

“As usual, it never has been my job description to seek out players,” he added.

“Over the years, I have been responsible for bringing players in, only because of my previous working relationship with those players and knowing their qualities and so on.

“I think everyone knows the players who are associated with me that have come to the club.

“I have been here for a long time now so the players that I know are Swindon players, so I can only try to promote from the youth team.

“Tim, for sure, has got a bigger network and knowledge of players, he is in more contact with more important people in the game who can push players in our direction and that is wonderful to have.

“I have my full trust in Tim and I am sure the players who come to the club will be of a very high standard and motivated and ready to play.”
