LUKE Williams hopes Luke Norris’ first home Swindon Town goal can be the catalyst the striker needs for a run of good form up front.

By his own admission, Norris has failed to hit top form for Town since signing from League One rivals Gillingham over the summer and Tuesday night’s strike in a 3-2 defeat at home to Luton Town in the Checkatrade Trophy is just his second for the club.

Norris' only other goal also came in the Trophy at Exeter City on November 8, so after drawing a blank in his first 17 Swindon appearances, the 23-year-old has now netted twice in his last four starts.

Town’s other frontline strikers, Jonathan Obika and Nathan Delfouneso, have also found the net just six times between them this term, so Williams hopes Norris’ splendid curled finish against the Hatters can lead to a glut of goals for the player.

“I thought he was outstanding,” said Williams post-match.

“The goal was superb because he hit it first time with no mistakes; the right power and he bends the ball around the goalkeeper, so it is pretty much perfect.

“His overall contribution to the game was excellent and it is something we have all seen within Luke, especially in training, and we know he is going to improve and improve.

“I hope this gives him a lift. I think there is every chance it will.

“I think his performances have been, on the whole, good. I think probably, he has played more minutes than he has done previously in his career and he has also lost a lot of body weight, which is helping him be more mobile on the pitch and be able to last longer during the game.

“I hope that now with the added confidence of that goal, we will see him more goals in the league.”

Norris was not the only player to notch a memorable Town goal in midweek as young midfielder Ellis Iandolo also got off the mark for the club with a spectacular drive from outside the box, having come on as a half-time substitute.

Williams said: “It was very stylish. The ball moved away, which is a nightmare for goalkeepers because the longer the goalkeeper looked at it, the more it seemed to be going in the corner.

“He does do that type of thing fairly often and it’s just getting the confidence and relaxing and getting the moment in the game to do it, and that’s the big test, isn’t it, and he passed that on Tuesday night.”
