SWINDON College Old Boys are bidding for more cup success as they face Tadley in the Southern Counties Senior Vase final tomorrow.

Martin Lloyd’s side are enjoying fine form in the league as they are 20 points clear at the top of Berks, Bucks and Oxon Premier with six league games remaining.

College, who won the Dorset and Wilts Senior Vase in December, saw their faultless campaign continued last weekend as they claimed a 49-6 win over Didcot to register their 14th consecutive victory.

College have beaten Tadley twice this term but director of rugby Lloyd doesn’t want his players to read too much into those games ahead of this weekend's final as they look to move a step closer to Twickenham.

“They are a funny old side because they very nearly beat us at the start of the season when we were down at their place,” said Lloyd. “It was a big score and I didn’t see any way back for us, but all of a sudden, they just stopped playing and ran out of steam.

“We scored try after try and managed to win 41-30. It was one of the strangest games I’ve seen.

“You have to discard we’ve beaten them in the league. You can’t take anything for granted.”

Lloyd insists his side are as prepared as they can be for the vase final, but admits that with heavy winds still on the forecast after storm Doris, conditions could make life more difficult for his troops.

But despite this, he remains adamant his side have more than enough quality to come away with the silverware.

“Tadley are a good outfit and they play a very forward-orientated game,” Lloyd added.

“They’re a strong, powerful team and they tend to attack you close and break you down before they spread the ball wide.

“If Doris has an impact, then I should imagine it will be a fairly tough game to defend against because they’ll just keep the ball.

“We aren’t too worried about that because the most important thing is you concentrate on our own game and your own patterns.

“We are mindful of how they are going to play but we want to focus on our strengths, and we think they are all across the field.

“So we are confident in our own game, respectful of others and hopefully, at the end of 80 minutes, we will have done okay.”

Lloyd is also keen to see College supporters make the trip to help cheer his troops to victory.

“We are really looking forward to the day. The supporters make a huge difference to us,” he said.

“Tadley have quite a large vocal support and it will be very nice if we could have some of our own support down there.”
