LLOYD Jones hopes to see Swindon Town click at the other end of the pitch against Coventry City this weekend after helping them turn in a solid defensive performance against Oldham Athletic last time out.

In their desperate search for a win that would aid their League One survival bid, Town’s defenders did their part as they kept the Latics at bay last Saturday to claim a ninth clean sheet of the campaign.

However, Swindon’s forward players did not hold up their end of the bargain as despite sending in 26 shots on goal, they drew a blank in a goalless draw at the County Ground.

With another crunch clash against a relegation rival lying in wait when Town travel to take on the Sky Blues at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday, on-loan centre back Jones is eager to see the team’s attacks start to bear fruit.

“We had a really good game on Saturday. Obviously we didn’t put the ball in the back of the net but we had over 25 shots,” said Jones, who is spending the season at the County Ground from Premier League side Liverpool.

“We have got to score to get ourselves out of this trouble we are in at the moment. After starting off with a draw against Oldham, now we have got Coventry and hopefully we can go and win there.

“The league table never lies. You are at the bottom for a reason. I think, every game, we have got to give it our all and take a few more risks to win these games.

“We have had nine clean sheets this season, so that is not a problem in the team.

“Obviously, it was a boost and it is always nice as a defender or goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet but the main thing we need is goals, so hopefully that can come on Saturday.

“We need goals but it’s also our job to keep it tight at the back.”

Jones has been a mainstay of the Town side for much of the season but was dropped from the squad for a 1-0 defeat at Bury a fortnight ago as he fell victim of Town’s seven-into-five loan conundrum.

The 21-year-old does not think that dilemma is too much of a worry within the camp and believes the addition of another loanee, Rohan Ince, in the holding midfield role, will be crucial to maintaining Swindon’s defensive solidarity.

“I think we have all just got to get on with it,” said Jones.

“The idea on Saturday was for Rohan to come in because we probably needed a bit more physical presence in midfield.

“I don’t think it’s a problem for whoever misses out because you almost know you will be playing the next game. You can’t be out of the squad all the time.

“It’s almost been rotated so far anyway, so we will just have to see on Saturday.”
