Greenmeadow spring cup upset

GREENMEADOW manager Brian Brogden admitted his team reserve their best football for the stronger teams, after they dumped Division One AFC Castrol out of the Fountain Trophies Junior Cup.

Brogden’s Division Two side disposed of their quarter-final opponents 4-0 on Saturday thanks to goals from Steve May, Mark Smith and Stuart Hodson (2).

The delighted boss said: “They are probably one of the best footballing sides we’ve ever played, if not the best.

“This season against the better teams we’ve stepped up a gear. Certain players in our team should be playing at a lot higher level and that tends to show when we play better opposition.

“I can’t fault anyone in our team at all because everyone was brilliant for 90 minutes.

“Special praise for our centre halves Andy Kitchener and Chris Ejsmont because they kept tight on their centre forwards and did not give them room to manoeuvre.”

Castrol’s Dave Gee had a shot cleared off the line early on before Steve May put Greenmeadow 10 minutes before half time.

Mark Smith headed in a corner after the break to double the lead and Stuart Hodson added two goals of his own to complete an emphatic victory.

Greenmeadow will take on higher league opposition in the semi-final on Saturday, in the form of AFC Abbey Rodbourne.

Minety’s quarter-final against Malmesbury Victoria, due to go ahead on Saturday, was postponed.

In further cup action, New College Swindon lost 1-0 to Melksham Town in the Corsham Print Senior Cup second round.

In the Premier Division, Purton beat Shrewton United 2-0 and Wroughton edged out visiting Westbury United 1-0.

Marlborough Town drew 1-1 with Corsham Town while Westside versus Bradford Town ended 2-2. Westside host New College Swindon on Tuesday.

In Division One, an Ian Byfield brace, including a last-minute winner, gave Swindon Nalgo victory at home to Wroughton Reserves.

Jeffrey and Adam O'Brea scored for Intel in their 3-2 defeat to league leaders SKS Blyskawica, while Steve White netted for Abbey Rodbourne in their 1-1 draw with Lower Stratton.

In Division Two, Blunsdon United Reserves surprised Byrons Wanderers 3-2 and Stephen Ward scored for Chiseldon in their 1-1 draw with Ramsbury.

Goals from Peter Fisher and Robert Curtis proved only a consolation for Pembroke in their 6-2 loss to Wilton Town.

Moredon Cheney crushed Marlborough Town reserves 4-1 with the goals coming from Spencer (2), Stephen Webb and Ian McCarthy.

Bradley Gill netted for KMLC in their 1-1 draw with FC Chippenham Youth Reserves.
