Douglas joins Swindon Town

FORMER Leeds midfielder Jonathan Douglas is set to be unveiled as Swindon Town's latest signing later today after completing his move to the County Ground.

The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international was joining his new teammates for training after agreeing terms with the club late last night.

Douglas, who has also played for Blackburn after starting his career in his homeland with Monaghan United, made more than 100 appearances for Leeds before being released earlier this summer.

He joins countryman Alan O'Brien, who agreed to join Town earlier this week.

Good signing.

But the fact remains we need at least two very good strikers in pronto, or we're going down.

What a brilliant signing! This midfield looks MUCH better now;

McNamee Douglas Timlin O'Brien.

Fitton & Wilson said they would be really trying to improve the spine of the team. Now we have Lucas, Greer + Morrison, Douglas + Timlin...now just for the strikers! We're on the march with Wilson's army!

Not sure about FANTASTIC - definitely good ! I have no doubt that Danny is selling Swindon Town OK and is working hard to sort out the vacuum in the forward line.

If you believe rumours then there were a couple of Championship sides in for him, so I would say it is a fantastic siging as it shows real intent.
We have signed 2 realtively young guys with Premiership experience and international caps , this time last year we were siging Yinka the Stinka and a 39 year old has been.

DW is sorting the strikers out, probably as I type...To say we would go down without two very good strikers is a bit much....we might not score many goals as the squad stands, but we wouldn't leak many either...All will be good...Good season ahead....

4 very experienced signings so far. The spine of our side is going to be solid if you consider-

Lucas,
Greer + Morrison, Douglas + Timlin/Easton

and the pace we will have on the wings in O'Brien, Macca and Macklin.

Looking forward to some Striker news over the next week.

That`s all fun of course but there is no reason to reach for the happy pills today is there ? To digress slightly I think the newly formed coaching back-up may well bring about improvements in Casal and Marshall, at least to create reliable replacements on the bench in times of need.

Good signing

The team is starting to look strong now, apart from up front, which I'm sure will be addressed soon.

I'd be shocked if we conceed anything like as many goals this season given the additions of greer, lucas, Shirtliff and now douglas adding some steel to the midfield.

another good signing, especially when you look back over the seasons gone by, we have never had many midfielders contribute to the goal tally.
This might be the key, as said DW knows what he wants,as to strikers he will add I feel 2 more. Its a difficult role to fill I remember years ago we had a big tub of lard called Ray Clarke never did a carrot for us but went to Mansfield and got mega goals ended up in Holland.
Just might be DW has things in hand so lets give him support no moaning.
Also was nice comments from Coxy as many of you have said we wish him all the best and get the Baggies promoted , then we will see a few quid our way

This signing certainly shows Danny,s qualities and good backing from AF and co. This guy was on good salary at Leeds so would not be cheap but all those knockers need to see what is going on here and look at the whole picture. This process takes time as Town will inevitably loose potential targets on the way its quite clear that this guy is better than OTJ, so it just goes to show that patience has its rewards.I'm sure Danny has the strikers and fullbacks in mind and is doing a superb recruiting job. Douglas in my view is a fantastic signing Town faced stiff competition over this signing so surely this should silence any doubters and its been mentioned that one Leeds fan said there is no way he would end up at a club like ours and needs to now eat his hat. Yes we all would like the team to be formed in just a couple of weeks but the waiting game has its rewards too as many players were released on 1st July. Lita was seen at the county ground this week so he looks like a potential target and worked under Danny before and went to Reading for a million. I would certainly take a gamble on this guy who scored 29 goals for B-City in one season.Come on fans lets take all the positives from what is happening at the Club New coaching team and great quality signings.Well done Danny and AF and the board and good luck to Simon Cox who done a superb job here in his too little time.

I’m genuinely excited for the new season. All of the signings DW has brought in are class for the division we are in. I like his philosophy of building from the back as well. I can see us playing like Westbrom a few years back when they got promoted to the Prem. Not scoring loads of goals, but always winning 1-0.

Definitely still need another striker, but I don’t think Coxs goals will be missed as much if we’re only conceding half the amount we did last term.

Cherno Samba is a player who about 5-6 years ago was a must sign player on championship manager but not sure whether he is any good in real life. Think he is a nippy little forward. A type of player that would do us good if he's any good.

I'm a Leeds fan myself, and after the disappointment of letting him go I'm very glad that he's gone to the only team I'd happily see him play for. Great signing for Swindon - providing he's played in his rightful position in the centre of the park.

Lol, Cherno Samba, mentioned a few comments up is another player I know well. And he is NOT good. Sorta like a lower league Carlton Cole. Clumsy, not very clinical, loses the ball easily. Lets hope that he doesn't join, or we're heading back in the wrong direction again.

A great signing agreed but 1 swallow doesn't make a summer. A few more of this quality and I'll be very happy. Does anyone think it strange that this comes 24hrs after the Cox sale? I think AF and co may have broken their wage structure to get him here - there's no way he would have come otherwise - so is this swom of the Cox money gone into this deal? We would go down with the squad as it is currently. As it stands we have a very good defence, an excellent midfield but a woeful forward line.

I'm sure DW will sort it out but I'm just saying we need at least two good strikers or we won't score enough goals. Two good strikers and I'm confident of an assault on the top six - failure to find those two good strikers and we're in for another relegation scrap. Don't forget we've got a 29 goal striker to replace!

We would go down with the current squad? Get a grip. So just because we don't have a better striker than Peacock to Partner Paynter we're down? Look at our defence and midfield. It's better than the majority of teams in this league. Paynter will get us 15 goals this season, the midfield WILL score goals, I'm confident in Wilson to get them to do that.

And all this talk of having to replace all 29 goals of Cox is ridiculous. We won't need to bring a 29 goalscorer in, we'll only need a 20 goal striker at best because we won't need to win games 4-3 like last season!

Look at other teams as well. Walsall, Tranmere and Stockport hardly have teams, the 4 promoted sides are all looking weak, and there's the likes of Yeovil that will struggle. We have better squads than all them listed, and for gods sake have some faith in DW.

I'm not trying to say we don't need a couple of strikers, because we do. But making the assumption that we'd be down with the current squad is plain stupidity at this stage, and shows your total lack of faith in our managers' ability.

Its a bit of a pointless argeument to say we would go down with our current strikeforce, beacuse we will without doubt sign a couple of stikers before the start of the season.

It is also a valid point that we dont need to replace all of coxys 29 goals at all.

Millwall finished 5th last season scoring 63 goals, we scored 68. The difference being they only conceeded 53 compared to our 71.

Southend finished 8th scoring just 58, conceeding 61.

Mikek - this is indeed a very good and dare I say surprise signing. I'm still on of the doubters - one signing of this quality is great but won't ultimately affect the team in a positive way until it's added to by another 3 or 4. Gree I would count as a great signing , Lucas 50/50 and O'brien has failed everywhere he's been so I see that as a bit of a gamble but I hope it works! I'm puzzled as to why we're able to land this established player but not able to land other lesser targets , any ideas?

There's 'demanding better', and there's being impatient & unrealistic, a lot of you fall into the 2nd category. We've pushed the boat out to land a player who was targeted by Championship clubs and you still seem more negative than positive! If we go into the Gillingham game still without new strikers, obviously I'd be worried, but some of you are already panicking about it, which once again highlights the impatience and lack of faith within our fanbase.

You say we'd have a fight on our hands at the moment, do you not maintain any faith in DW at all? After all, we were in play-off form at the end of last season and at the moment our squad looks better already (apart from Cox going and having no left-back yet, plus a couple of areas without much back-up). We've got the new coaching staff in now and I'm sure they'll get the best out of the current squad, as well as any potential new recruitments.

If Douglas got a long-term injury we would play Easton, and if Greer got a long-term injury we would play Ifil/Aljofree/Lescin
el. That wasn't a very good question in all honesty fella.

All I'm saying is we stayed up by the skin of our teeth last season and we've lost our best player. It doesn't take a genius to work out that we will struggle if we don't sign some quality forwards.

It's not me being negative, it's me being realistic. I remember being on here last summer saying I thought we would struggle and I was vilified by most people for being negative! But I was right.

If/when we sign some front players then I'll be more optimistic as I think the rest of the squad is very good but without a recognised goalscorer we will be in trouble, you mark my words.

Do you honestly think that DW won't sign a recognised goalscorer? Do you not remember that at the end of last season we were in play-off form under DW, and now he's bought in 4 very good signings and new staff! DW and the staff will get the best out of the players this season, have some faith fella.

You cant have faith in something once its happened. It defies the point of having faith in the first place!

You can have faith in the fact that DW will be trying to sign a striker based on his interviews to date. Then you can believe we wont go down, like i do!

AF and DW seem to me to be prfessional people. They will have identified the areas that need to change. From AF's prospective, he needed to carry on making Swindon a more viable business, provide support to his manager and demonsrate that Swindon is a club people want to come to. Given our new sponsorships, the freedom DW has been given and the quotes from Douglas suggest that these are being achieved.

As for DW, he had a team that effectivly needed rebuilding. He appointed a brand new (and in my opinion considerably better) backroom staff, bought an expeienced goalkeeper, secured Greer who was almost as vital as Cox in keeping us up and has gone a long way towards putting a midfield together that will both protect the back lin but will also create (maybe score) goals at the other end. DW will know full well he needs more up front but until the Cox saga was concluded there is not much he culd do. Was Cox staying or going, how much money available etc. I think now this has been resolved we will see movement in of new strikers.

I don,t think worrying is at all neccesary. In the last five days DW has secured several big signings that has re-shaped our team. There is till four weeks till season starts. I,m not trying to be provocative but there does seem to be a number of posters who enjoy being negative. First it was whether Fitton was being to tight with purse strings. Now that has been proved wrong with Douglas signing people have now criticised our lack of action on building the front line. People need to take some prospective. Look at other teams. I think town have clearly shown their intentions for the new season and that is a run at the play-offs. Everyone at the club will know more forwards are needed so we will see action in the ne few weeks.

Don't think we should worry too much about the "missing 2 strikers". It'll happen, I'm sure of it and I'm equally sure they'll be quality signings too. I'm sure a fee will be involved for at least 1 of the signings to use up some of the Coxy money (to keep the fans happy) and I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't try exchanging 1 or 2 of our players as part of one of the deals. The way things are going at the mo makes me feel positively positive about the coming season!

Uh, the fact the Newcastle didn't keep him I deem to be a failure - then to not impress in the Scottish leagues is a failure and to say he had a hard time because he replaced a favourite is rubbish. I didn't copmletely writehim off though, I think that if he's played at these levels and dropps 2 divisions to us he SHOULD be ok. My point is that this isn't a massive signing. I agree generally with what you say, but I just wanted to let you know that the season-start is 4 weeks away & not 3.

Another lad who was at Leeds last season (on loan this time). Good player, didn't score too much but he looked sharp and alert, and wasn't really given much of a chance (only played when Becks was suspended). Would love to see him join - he's exactly what Swindon need - but last I saw he was on his way Brighton (according to SkySports).

And Lars - that's quite pessimistic, and that comes from one of the biggest pessimists around. At this moment in time, our team is stronger than at least one half of the division. The transfer market only opened a week ago and most clubs are very small due to releasing players. Sure, if we sign no strikers we'll probably struggle, but why would we sign no replacements for released players and everyone else would? Everyone else will sign players, so will we. The season doesn't start for five or six weeks, plenty of time to strengthen. Relax. I know you speak the truth, but you're speaking like the league starts tomorrow and we're the only team without a finished squad.
