THE makeshift pairing of Andy Philpott and Sam Collier proved a potent strikeforce for Wootton Bassett Town as they put four past Tytherington Rocks.
Philpott, playing his first game for the club in a striking role, and Collier, a natural left-back, both hit doubles in the 4-1 win at Rylands Way.
The emphatic win saw Bassett continue their incredible run of goal-scoring in the Hellenic League Division One West - with the total now standing at 21 goals in the last six games.
Rocks had opened the scoring in bizarre fashion after seven minutes when Tytherington goalkeeper Rob Dent launched an old-fashioned hoof from his own penalty area.
The ball bounced some 10 yards outside the opposing box and, helped by the wind, looped over helpless stopper Stuart Thompson and into the net But Philpott scored his first goal for the club since signing on loan from Swindon Supermarine Reserves after 20 minutes to level the score at 1-1.
The damage was done in the second half as first Collier (57), Philpott (75) and Collier again (88) helped Bassett race away to the win.
Bassett boss Dave Turner said: “Andy Philpott couldn’t have made a better debut up front. He was superb.
“Sam Collier has played a few games up front for us now and almost every time he scores or creates.
“But let’s see how long the goals last before we start getting too excited about the partnership.”
Turner is still looking to bolster his attacking options as he has a seven day approach in for a striker.
He hopes to add the new frontman to the recent capture of wide midfielder Andy Bryant, who debuted on Saturday after leaving Wiltshire League side Wroughton.
Elsewhere in Division One West, Cirencester United were beaten 4-1 in their basement battle at Trowbridge Town.
Tom Bonser, Tarick Yachou and Chris Gittens put Trowbridge 3-0 up at the break, and Sam Meredith added another 10 minutes from the end.
Paul Patel scored a consolation for Ciren three minutes from time.
Purton were not in league action but instead played out a thrilling Wiltshire Senior Cup tie with visiting Laverstock and Ford.
The Wessex League side eventually edged the second round clash 4-3 to prevent an upset by Chris Pethick’s side.
In the Hellenic League Premier Division, Highworth suffered a surprise 3-0 defeat at Abingdon Town, with Liam Barson, Graham Edney and Drew Fowler on target for the hosts.
Fairford Town slipped further into trouble after losing 2-0 at home to Ascot United, as a goal in each half from Andy Lunn and Rob Saunders proved enough. Dean Thomas and Ian Brooks netted as Reading Town defeated Shrivenham 2-0, while Malmesbury Vics’ fixture against Old Woodstock Town was postponed.
