Wilson relieved as lucky Town progress

DANNY Wilson admitted his Town side were “fortunate” to still have a place in the FA Cup, as they scraped past non-league Wrexham.

Captain Gordon Greer’s late header sealed a 1-0 victory from a poor Swindon performance in north Wales in which the boss believes his side were “pushed to the limit” by the Red Dragons.

Wilson knows progression to the third round of the competition was imperative even though Town were far from at their best, and they now have a January 2 tie against Fulham as a reward for the result.

“We never thought for one minute this was going to be easy, and I have said all along that Wrexham would fancy this tie,” said the manager.

“There were times when we could have done better with the ball, times when we rushed it ourselves and times when we got into a game of second balls. But they pressed us very hard and very high, and wouldn't let us settle.

“Wrexham pushed us to the limit defensively, we've had some great saves from Dave Lucas, and we've managed to muster a little bit of quality when it mattered.

“The defensive side of things got us through the game, and it was very, very tough.

“Yes, we were fortunate, but the main objective was to get through the tie, and thankfully we are through.”

Wrexham were reduced to 10 men early in the second half when Christian Smith’s two-footed lunge on Jonathan Douglas brought a straight red card for the midfielder.

And Wilson believes referee Graham Salisbury got the decision spot on.

“There can be no argument about it, can there? It was absolutely reckless,” he said.

“We were delighted there was nothing serious wrong with Jon. I think he saw it coming and got his feet off the ground, because otherwise he would have ended up with a broken leg.

“It was a horrendous tackle and deservedly a sending off. There can't be any complaints at all.”
