SOUTHERN LEAGUE: Super Ciren topple form team Frome

Cirencester Town ended Frome Town's five month unbeaten run in a superb footballing contest on a slippery Corinium pitch. The Ceturions sneaked a 1-0 win against their in-form opponents in Zamaretto South and West 1 on Saturday.

Lucky to escape early on when a Callum Henry header was cleared off the line by Matt Sysu, Ciren calmly and carefully worked the ball upfield on the deck.

Carl Brown was twice denied an opening goal, first by by the alert defending of Jamie Cheeseman and then, after linking well with Jody Bevan, the big frame of Steve Perrin.

Minutes later, Brown combined well with Thompson to make space on the right and when his ground pass came in on the penalty spot Thompson was first to the ball but then forced to shoot early and sent the ball over the bar.

Ciren kept the pressure on the Frome backline so much so that the only visiting chances were isolated long ball forays, calmly contained by Lyndon Tomkins and Matt Sysum.

After Perrin had twice dived to stop efforts from the lively Rob Hoskin, then watch Reaney clear a dangerous Matt Pritchett cross from beyond the far post, Brown again got the better of Henry and Cheeseman on 40 minutes.

Collecting a clever Bevan pass he was grounded inside the penalty area by a desperate Cheesemen only to be ruled offside and the sides were deadlcoked at the interval.

Ciren took the lead after the break when Carl Brown collected an astute Matt Pritchett pass and fired in a 20 yard snorter that Perrin did well to reach, but the keeper was helpless as Rob Hoskin was quickest to react, slotting in from five yards.

Ciren should have put the match away after that but Frome survived, with Henry and Cheesemen defending valiantly.

As the half progressed, Frome came more into the game.

Matt Peters, overshadowed by Thompson until the latter stages, began to find some midfield space. But the only real chance came on 74 minutes when Cheeseman met a far post free-kick with a solid knock back to the penalty spot.

Ben Thomson looked to have a clear shot but, just as Henry had denied Chris Thompson for Ciren in the first half, Matt Sysum got himself close enough to force a wild shot over the top.

Carl Brown, completing his first full game since October, was always dangerous for Ciren and had a glorious chance on 88 minutes when Rob Dean broke from midfield.

But after making himself yards of space with a magnificent jink and change of pace beyond Cheeseman, Brown was undone when the young midfielder overhit his pass.

In the Zamaretto Premier, Chippenham Town fell further off the play-off pace after suffering a 1-0 defeat at Stourbridge.

Ryan Rowe scored the only goal fropm the spot late in the first half as Chippenham squandered a host of openings.

Supermarine had their crunch clash with Bedford postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
