DANNY Wilson has urged his Town players to temper ambition with caution after seeing his side concede another late goal to visiting Charlton at the County Ground on Saturday.
After the game Wilson admitted his frustration with what is fast becoming an unhealthy habit for the Robins, but was adamant that the root cause of the problem was tactical rather than physical.
Town appeared weary and heavy-legged as the match drew to its conclusion - unsurprising considering the number of minutes of game-time accrued by the starting 11 since the season began in August.
But Wilson denied that fitness was an issue, and instead isolated a selection of strategical and mental creases which he intends to iron out in time for the visit of Oldham on Tuesday night.
“It is very disappointing because I thought we had done enough in the game to get a second goal,” he said.
“We should have seen the game out, we haven’t cleared our lines of the final ball and it’s cost us.
“It does come down to concentration.
“We were rushing things to try and get that second goal and there were people in offensive positions when they shouldn’t be in offensive positions.”
The Town boss reiterated the need for a calm head under pressure, and admitted that history must stop repeating itself if the Robins harbour serious aspirations of promotion.
“It’s something we have to address because those situations have arisen twice in two games,” he said “It’s about people taking charge on the pitch, that’s the hardest part.
“It’s just calming your teammate down a bit, not letting your mind be all worked up and in overdrive.
“When you’re in possession and you’re in the ascendancy you never seem tired. But when you’re chasing the game obviously you are.”
And the County Ground chief spoke of how he felt his team had squandered the advantage in the closing stages.
“We got ahead of the ball too much,” he said.
“We were all guilty of it at times - trying to go and get that second ball instead of tightening up.
“There’s nothing wrong with being ambitious and wanting to win games more emphatically if you can but you’ve got to understand that that’s not always going to be the case.
“Sometimes you have to settle for what you’ve got and I thought we were a little naive at times.”

Still in a bit of shock from Saturday that could concede so late again. Think that is now 6 post 90 mins for the season. I have been deabting it with my mates and had always come down on the side of its just tactical and a mental issue rather than fitness. Maybe thats what I wanted to believe as we had the same issue last season, all be it to lose games rather than draw. Saturday though convinced me it is fitness as well as tactical. Yes the adver they have played a lot of football but that's there job. They did not have a midweek game (as Charlton did) and therefor had seven clear days to sort it out. Maybe this is a lesson for the board to spend heavily on strength and conditioning coaches and take a very scientific approach. After all uts good enough for Utd Arsenal and the like. And when I say spend heavily we are not talking big numbers when compared with the players salaries even in our league. We are still looking good and I still believe we have a chance of automatic promotion but lets sort this out boys.

Shaner Thats my piont is Dave Morrison good enough? We can judge the manager on the players he brings in tactics etc, the players on how they perform on the pitch. But's its difficult for us supporters to judge something most of us haven't a clue about. I'm just putting it out there. I think its an area we should strive to be as good as we can be as its (relatively) little cost and may return a huge amount (of points).

IMO we sit back and invite teams on to us for the last 15 mins of the game, we stop pressing so far up the pitch and start sitting on top of our defence, this invites teams onto us and they know they can score in the last ten mins as we do concede late goals. It is what it is, but should be worked on, I was gutted at that late goal because they didn't deserve it....

Just because Oldham are down bottom of League 1 dont think for a minute this will be an easy game, better to put out a full strength team and get the 3 points than start messing about and either draw or lose? And...Aljofree will have a point to prove, i have read some posts on here that say they will be weak in defence because he is playing, i think the opposite is the truth, he will probably play the game of his life and be desperate to help Oldham get something from this match. As for these late goals we keep letting in, i dont think it is anything to do with fitness, more a frame of mind, the players need to be mentally stronger and more professional. If we have any aspirations of a top 2 finish then we need 3 points tomorrow evening and 3 points next Saturday against Huddersfield, i will be there at Huddersfield and am desperate to see us get back to winning ways.
Dont think Charlton deserved a point.Good education for some of our less experienced lads,so draw not the end of the world.Agree with dreamof automatic promotion still possible, however at least 3 decent players needed in emergency loan window.Starting Tuesday night JPM,Ward Greer,Austin should be rested Macklin,Obrien,or Marshall,Morrison Pericard (if fit)to start should still beat Oldham no problem.Shows how far we have progressed last seasons lot would have lost to Oldham tues night, these guys won't predict2or 3 goal victory.

hertz wrote:Good measured post Hertz. Another reason we were pinned back late on is that we made an ineffective substitution. Macklin may yet prove to be a good player but at the moment he doesn't have the strength or confidence to hold the ball up. He needs to be given his chance as a sub when the points are already in the bag, not when we are holding on under pressure. I agree that it's still looking good. Can't see Oldham rolling over but with a full strength team we should get the points.
Charlton did their homework alright and it paid off , they still have that Prem mentality to go soak it up away from home for 40 mins first half then go for it , soak it up 30 mins second half then go for it , we could all see it coming on Saturday we were flat at the back and getting pushed to our own 18 yard line and Charlton looked quick and threatening at end of both halves . I guess all in all we would have all liked the thought of 4 points from Leeds and Charlton before the games .Now the real work begins we have to dig deep against the Oldham the Carlisle and the Stockports these will be frustrating games , not so open and could easily slip up . Gate was a bit dissapointing Saturday too , I guess we will get less each week again now , keep it up reds its still looking good .

I'm sure the booing will cure the players of these last minute goal giveaways. Come on fans get real we are in with a great chance of play-offs and the team need yor support through thick and thin so that means good or bad.
One thing for sure we have to get behind the lads tomorrow and we have to try to raise the noise level toward the last 20 minutes of the game to give them that 12th man lift , the hum of moaning around the ground won't help their confidence when they need it most . Good long chant of Red Army works wonders and warms your hands and feet , seeemples

Well, as an exiled fan I am still happy to where we are in the table. At the end of the day the Town in my book have exceeded all expectations so far this season. One more point ans we are safe, ok who know's we may reach the play offs come april. Just think back to seasons where we were playing catch up to survie the drop??? Yes it's bad news to let late goals in this can be rectified am sure DW and his team will sort it out. Lets not forget as a club in my opinion we have a good manager a decent Chairman and Board who are steering the club to a healthy standing. So lets see the Town win on Tuesday and continue on there quest for promotion, at the end of the day they still have a decent shot at the play offs let's get behind them.As to the Booing on Sta was pure frustration from fans, to be honest I have supported Town since 1961 and there the only club who can be 3 up and your worrying about drawing or getting beat 4-3, still for us fans you just love them and hate them at times ,however most of all we are SWINDON TOWN FANS Good luck Tuesday
