SWINDON AND DISTRICT LEAGUE: Wanderers win top of the table clash

OLD Town Wanderers hit the summit of Division One of the Swindon and District League after triumphing in a seven-goal thriller against Crumpled Horn.

Two late goals saw Wanderers snatch a 4-3 win and exchange places with their rivals at the top of the table. Aiden Doyle opened the scoring for Wanderers but Horn responded immediately through J Lewis.

Anthony McCusker’s long range strike put Wanderers back in front, but again Horn replied straight away, this time through Richie Baker-Miles.

After the interval, Horn took the lead for the first time as Baker-Miles notched up his second.

Horn were then put under severe pressure and held out until the last five minutes of the game, when Dave Rendle’s strike levelled matters.

With seconds left, Doyle grabbed his second of the match to give Wanderers a last-gasp victory.

Top scorers on Saturday were Zurich Old Boys, who romped to a 10-1 thrashing of Spectrum.

Craig Alexander weighed in with five and there were pairs apiece for Andi Drinkwater and Dave Devine, while the experienced Martin Groundsel also netted.

CitiFaith remained third in Division One after Elliot Pether’s goal gave them a hard-fought 1-0 win over Penhill Allstars.

Second-bottom Ruchi crushed basement side CitiFaith Ajax 7-1 as Cary Watson, Paul Newman (2) Kev Taylor (3) and Chris Tewksbury found the net. Aaron Northcott managed a consolation for Ajax.

Queensfield extended their advantage at the top of the Premier Division after seeing off second-placed Fratello’s.

Adam Jack’s double gave Queenie a 2-1 win and saw them go four points clear of their nearest challengers.

Showroom Finish overcame stubborn resistance from bottom side Queenstown to win 2-0.

Steve Holland gave Showroom an early lead and Anton Webb’s last-minute tap-in sealed victory.

Elsewhere, TS Tech entertained VBA Rangers, with the away side running out 3-0 winners.

The deadlock was broken when Dave Hamilton picked out Gareth Walton and he shot past the despairing dive of Nick Stratton.

Several outstanding saves from Nathan Wallace kept Rangers ahead, before Walton struck home a second. Jon Mapson wrapped up the game when he volleyed in from close range.
