SIMON Ferry believes that Swindon Town are as good as any other side in the division on their home patch.
The on-loan midfielder was Town’s stand-out performer in the weekend draw with Charlton, dominating the middle of the park with partner Jonathan Douglas.
And the Celtic man claims that the way in which the side overwhelmed the Addicks for long periods of the contest proves that they have the beating of the majority of their League One peers.
“It gives us so much confidence when we’re outplaying these teams,” he said.
“Leeds, Charlton and Huddersfield have come here and we’ve been better than them. It’s just little things which are stopping us from being in the top two.
“There’s no reason why we can’t be up there. We’re very confident about what we can do this season.”
It is that driving ambition which has propelled Swindon up the league table this season, during which Ferry has been instrumental in the team’s successes.
The Scot continues to thrive in his temporary environment, and reiterated how much he is enjoying his football in Wiltshire.
“It’s a great team to play in,” he said. “When I first came here, the manager (Tony Mowbray) was worried about me coming to a place where they weren’t going to pass the ball. But he said that Danny Wilson would try and pass it and to be fair he’s lived up to his word.
“It’s a perfect team for me to come and play in.”
The 22-year-old admitted that Town lacked the mental strength to withstand Charlton’s late barrage on Saturday, but is confident that the squad will learn their lesson ahead of tonight’s clash with Oldham.
“The goal looked like it was going to come,” he said. “It’s definitely a mental thing. It’s nothing to do with ability, we just seem to panic a little bit.
“We stop doing the things that we’re good at in the last 10 minutes and that’s what’s frustrating us the most. We don’t know why we’re doing it.
“We’re going to have a chat about it and go from there.”
Ferry’s contributions to Swindon’s performances frequently go unnoticed, so his nomination as the sponsors’ man of the match on Saturday came as a refreshing surprise. Nevertheless, the Dundee native was quick to share the plaudits with his teammates.
“I’ve got to be good at something so I just run about. The boys have been finding good passes and that’s what makes the difference.
“If you’re making the runs and the ball doesn’t come to you then noone really sees you, but against Charlton some of the boys put in some nice balls, so it’s good to be noticed.”
