WILTSHIRE suffered their third consecutive 19-17 away defeat at the hands of high-flying Pembrokeshire at the weekend.
Jill Little and Jan Murphy got Wiltshire off to the best possible start with wins in the opening two Ladies B matches. Kim Simpson then missed opportunities to win the third before Heather Lane restored Wiltshire’s two-point advantage. Ally Harrison was unlucky to meet Gemma Bowen’s best game and when Ally Thomson lost, the score was levelled at 3-3.
David Gould played well before losing 3-2 but then Wiltshire fought back brilliantly through man of the match Bob Phillips and with 3-0 victories for Rob Higginson, Garry Ellis, Chris Bailey and John Newland, the score was 8-4 in the visitors’ favour.
Steve Venn and Pete Harris never got going but Paul Boulton took a last leg decider and the score was 9-6. Clive Taylor and Mark Hocking both lost before Terry Smith made the overnight score 10-8 to Wiltshire.
An early Sunday start saw lady of the match Tina Rowlands destroy her opponent before Ann Paget took on former world number one Julie Gore. Despite hitting a maximum 180 in the opening leg, missed doubles cost Paget dearly and Gore eventually came through to win.
Rachel Hutton played brilliantly to win 3-0 and despite Erica Hartnett losing, Wiltshire still had their noses in front. Jo Hooke and Karen Hutton shared the last two matches and the score was 13-11 in Wiltshire’s favour going into the Men’s A matches.
Lee Evans was defeated before easy victories for teenager Chris Aubrey and man of the match Dave Wicks. Defeats for Steve Willard and Chris Daglish made the score 15-14 to Wiltshire.
Mark Cox took a last leg decider before defeats for Mick Duggan, Richard Ettwell, Richie Jones, Juan Hopkins and Tony Clark made Ron Ashton’s last match victory in vain.
With second-placed Humberside also losing, Wiltshire gained a point to leave the county still in very decent shape to obtain promotion.
