DANNY Wilson ordered a review of Town’s training regime in a bid to cure their recurring hamstring problems, but the flummoxed boss has been forced to admit defeat, labelling their injury woes as an “unfortunate coincidence”.
Swindon could be without up to six first team players for tonight’s trip to League One rivals Southampton, with Billy Paynter and Sean Morrison definitely ruled out, and David Lucas, Danny Ward, Kevin Amankwaah and Vincent Pericard all doubtful.
Paynter, Lucas, Amankwaah and Pericard are all suffering from hamstring strains, while Alan Sheehan and Alan O’Brien have also suffered with the complaint this season, and Wilson told the Advertiser it was an issue he wanted to investigate further.
“We’ve analysed everything because we thought there may be something more to it,” explained the manager.
“There were three on Saturday and we’ve had others before that.
“We’ve looked at the pitches, training, all the things we’ve been doing, whether certain things we’ve been doing have put us in this situation, and if we need to change anything.
“But we’ve had to dismiss them all. It seems like just an unfortunate coincidence.
“With hamstrings you have to be so careful. You can’t keep testing them, you can’t let the players go training. You just have to let them settle down and even then when you don’t feel anything they can just appear again. We have to be very careful of them.”
Wilson admitted after Saturday’s win at Brighton that he would be forced to step up his search for new loan signings due to Town’s injury problems.
And the boss confirmed that unless there is a miraculous recovery from his sidelined front men, a striker will be top of his list.
“I don’t think you will see anybody before the Southampton game, but I would like to think that by the end of the week we may have someone in,” said Wilson.
“Particularly now with the new injuries we’ve got it makes it even more important.
“We’ll have to see what’s available to us after Tuesday, but at the moment in time we’ve got no strikers apart from Charlie.
“The injuries are bad enough considering we are going to a team who are really on song at this moment in time.
“It’s disappointing that we haven’t got a full compliment, but we still have a squad of players who are more than capable of going to Southampton and getting a result.”

As to replacements no doubt you have been trying since Sat, my question is the squad has allways beena bit lightweight why wait until this spat of injuries to get additions in???
I see the Southampton manager says we are hoping for a draw. well scare the pants off them put young Billy Bodin up front with Charlie Austin, you have nothing to lose as you say you only have one fit striker.
What happens when he gets injured???
You have done a great job this season however preperation and planning to cover injuries and suspensions have not been thought out.
Like all of us we want the club to win this evening never mind the draw, go there scare them I am sure our younger players will rise to the occaision.
Again DW as an exiled fan, you have done us proud this season and so have the squad, so tonight as allways will be glued to the internet.
DO IT REDS GO ALL OUT AGAINST THE ODDS
