Wilson claims injuries are down to bad luck

DANNY Wilson ordered a review of Town’s training regime in a bid to cure their recurring hamstring problems, but the flummoxed boss has been forced to admit defeat, labelling their injury woes as an “unfortunate coincidence”.

Swindon could be without up to six first team players for tonight’s trip to League One rivals Southampton, with Billy Paynter and Sean Morrison definitely ruled out, and David Lucas, Danny Ward, Kevin Amankwaah and Vincent Pericard all doubtful.

Paynter, Lucas, Amankwaah and Pericard are all suffering from hamstring strains, while Alan Sheehan and Alan O’Brien have also suffered with the complaint this season, and Wilson told the Advertiser it was an issue he wanted to investigate further.

“We’ve analysed everything because we thought there may be something more to it,” explained the manager.

“There were three on Saturday and we’ve had others before that.

“We’ve looked at the pitches, training, all the things we’ve been doing, whether certain things we’ve been doing have put us in this situation, and if we need to change anything.

“But we’ve had to dismiss them all. It seems like just an unfortunate coincidence.

“With hamstrings you have to be so careful. You can’t keep testing them, you can’t let the players go training. You just have to let them settle down and even then when you don’t feel anything they can just appear again. We have to be very careful of them.”

Wilson admitted after Saturday’s win at Brighton that he would be forced to step up his search for new loan signings due to Town’s injury problems.

And the boss confirmed that unless there is a miraculous recovery from his sidelined front men, a striker will be top of his list.

“I don’t think you will see anybody before the Southampton game, but I would like to think that by the end of the week we may have someone in,” said Wilson.

“Particularly now with the new injuries we’ve got it makes it even more important.

“We’ll have to see what’s available to us after Tuesday, but at the moment in time we’ve got no strikers apart from Charlie.

“The injuries are bad enough considering we are going to a team who are really on song at this moment in time.

“It’s disappointing that we haven’t got a full compliment, but we still have a squad of players who are more than capable of going to Southampton and getting a result.”

Yes DW something is wrong somewhere to many training injuries?????
As to replacements no doubt you have been trying since Sat, my question is the squad has allways beena bit lightweight why wait until this spat of injuries to get additions in???
I see the Southampton manager says we are hoping for a draw. well scare the pants off them put young Billy Bodin up front with Charlie Austin, you have nothing to lose as you say you only have one fit striker.
What happens when he gets injured???
You have done a great job this season however preperation and planning to cover injuries and suspensions have not been thought out.
Like all of us we want the club to win this evening never mind the draw, go there scare them I am sure our younger players will rise to the occaision.
Again DW as an exiled fan, you have done us proud this season and so have the squad, so tonight as allways will be glued to the internet.

DO IT REDS GO ALL OUT AGAINST THE ODDS

I am liking the Bodin shout, they wont know what to expect and Billy deserves to get a game, come on Danny why not?

Whats this debt-club all about, I dont wanna write that in the lil box but if I dont I have just wasted 30 seconds writing this???

Mallorca, too many training injuries?? 4 of those 6 players are out to to injuries whilst playing matches. Kevin, Lucas, Pericard and Ward were all injured in games as was Sheehan and O'Brien. That just leaves Paynter and Morrison and both have different injuries so personally i don't see a trend with the 'training injuries' that you say.
Good shout with Bodin though, he has been banging them in for the reserves so would be a good time to have him at least on the bench, also does anyone know if Macklin is still out on loan or injured or what???

Bodin is going to be quality, but I think its a bit early, play richie just behind charlie and have him playing off Austin, he can score and will scare them or Marshall for that matter, his pace would scare them and give us the option of the ball over the top.

Danny Ward went off Saturday with a head injury , surely he is ok for tonight , if midfield and defense can hold out we could nick this one , problem then is how many walking wounded will we have for the Norwich game ? Sprtsmen these days are much more in tune with their bodies so they pull up at the slightest twinge to be safe , the old cold sponge in a bucket with ice on it always seemed to work just fine :0)

Smith
Darby-Cuthbert-Greer
-Sheehan
(not much wrong with that)
JP-Ferry-Douglas-Rit
chie
(not much wrong with that)
Ward (Bodin for 45mins)-Austin
Trouble is on the bench...we've only got Danny Wilson, Shirtlift and...... they've even recalled Lou Macari!!?
Imagine being shouted at to be told by Wilson "you're playing so badly I'm going to bring myself on in place of you!!"?..that will sort them out!!
They have nothing to lose tonight and are fully capable of beating the Saints.....just a tough task at St Mary's with half a squad but wouldn't that beer taste soooo good IF we snatched a win!?
I'll swap dropping 6 points v Saints and Norwich if it means we rest all the main players and get them ready for the important games v Tranmere, Exeter, Walsall etc... those are the games that will give us a play-off place.

Ward could play up from, with ritchie left wing. Think we will go 4-3-3 / 4-5-1 though with Charlie, Ward & Marshall up front, JP, Ferry and Douglas in midfield.

on a plus side, 15 more points should do us for a play off place. and looking at our run in i think, 5 wins out of the 10 or so games, should be more than achievable even with a thread bare squad. and hopefully all these hamstring injuries will have cleared up by then.

Ward should get the nod up front, but if we want to give Bilbo a shot in the second half he needs to replace Ritchie (with Ward going back to left wing) as he hasnt done much of note yet.

I tweaked a hammy last week and its a pain in the arse, well leg actually.

Good luck tonight.

If Ward got proper concussion he won't play tonight. If so I think we'll go 4-5-1 purely due to the lack of strikers. Hopefully we'll have one or two back when Saturday comes.

If Ward is not fit I think we will start as we finished on Sat. Leaving Richie and hopefully Bodin to have some game time too. I think Marshall earned another game and he will work hard to keep the full back busy and cover when they attack.(For that reason I would keep him in even if Ward is fit and plays in a 2 with Austin.) We will need to stay in the game early on because we will find it very hard to recover from early goals. I doubt the hamstrings will have healed in time.

Knew we should of got loan players in months ago !! , gonna cost us dearly now , with all the injuries we have !! . Be very lucky if we get anything out of these next two games , especially with our thread bare squad !!

Do you guys remember at end of last season, when DW decide who went and who stayed.

AF said on here, we had to cutback on how many squad players we had.

They would go for quality rather than quanity. We got the quality but lack quanity, and now we are paying the price for lack of squad players.

Ward up front with Charlie. Billy B on bench.

Smith is fine as cover for Lucas. Darby covers Amankwah. Morrison not a first teamer. Pericard no loss as yet if Ward can play.

Can't see us losing but will it be 1 or 3 points?

Is Billy Bodin a first team player then I thought he was just in the youth team. He doesn’t seem to have a squad number.
