DAVID Howell carded a solid first round 70 to finish the opening day of the Trophée Hassan II at the Royal Golf Dar Es Salamin Rabat, Morocco in a tie for 28th place.
Howell registered an early birdie on the 10th hole (his first of the round) to settle any pre-tournament nerves.
But back-to-back bogeys on 14 and 15 soon pushed the Broome Manor pro over par.
However, the former Ryder Cup star knuckled down and shot an impressive eagle at the second to restore his confidence, and bagged a further birdie at six to finish the day on a high.
Howell tees off tomorrow morning at 9.11am GMT, again alongside Ignacio Garrido from Spain.
