SWINDON boxer Kelvin Young’s chances of getting a first date in front of the cameras has increased after Kenny Anderson withdrew from the Prizefighter Series, scheduled to be televised live from Liverpool tonight.

Although that did not open up an immediate place in the eight-man starting line-up for the 23 year-old former Penhill amateur star, it has moved him up the pecking order.

Keith Mayo, Young’s promoter, said: “Rocky Fielding, one of the reserves who comes from Merseyside, found himself promoted to take over from Kenny Anderson.

“As a local boxer it was inevitable that he would get the first opportunity. Had it been staged in the West Country then Kelvin would have had the nod.

“But it means he is more likely to have to step in as a replacement, should one of the other boxers get injured at some stage of the competition.

“Nevertheless, the opportunity is great for Kelvin and underlines what we set out to achieve when we opened the Horseshoe Gym in Greenbridge.

“Our aim is to develop and nurture local boxing talent and enable each fighter to reach their maximum potential.

“That is what Kelvin has done with his trainer Islan Eltuyev, and I’m certain others are destined to follow.

“An integral part of being a promoter is to open up the opportunities for your fighters and I’ve been pressing Kelvin’s case for more recognition at every opportunity.

“If he gets the chance to climb through the ropes in Liverpool then he will give an excellent account of himself.”

This is the 17th series of Prizefighter where eight boxers first contest three-round quarter finals, followed by semi-finals and the final itself over one night. The format has proved popular with fight fans and is televised live on Sky.
