Town v Burton: GAME OFF

SWINDON Town's League Two fixture with Burton has been called off due to a frozen pitch.

The club invested in a heated dome yesterday to help defrost the pitch, but temperatures plummeted to below zero degrees last night.

The club held a pitch inspection at 10am to determine whether today's game could go ahead, and the decision was made to postpone the fixture.

Long! From the box office, almost to the County inn. I've been here since 5.30.

Just seen the latest forecast, seems to me that even if the match can start it may be hard to finish it as it looks like snow from 3pm, as bad as i want it on think the sensible decision would be an early postponement. Will be pretty peed if we dont finish the game, when the forecast is so poor.

if you dont already have a ticket and not in the queue then i wouldnt bother. people been there all night and wont be many left already. ive got one but i think there should of been a scheme to offer tickets to season tickets holders on time season ticket has been held rather than all turn up early in the cold.

My mate got my ticket this morning. In que at 6.15 and at least 200 in front of him. People buying 3 and 4 at a time.

I was also on phone for 30 minutes but as soon as my mate told me he had got one I hung up.

My Brother still on phone but no luck yet.

They will be sold in a few hours no doubt.

Shame about today, the covers were probably a day late going on. I hope they keep them on and get the Barnet game on, with it being on Sky we don't want to miss out on the TV money and it could be difficult to re-schedule.

It will be a very strange afternoon without Town playing :-(

Surely the game has been called off because the pitch is unplayable and dangerous. When were these "good old days" when games were not called off because of dangerous surfaces? Not in the last 50 years, that's for sure.
.
As for your dig at the ref... you don't even know that it was the match referee who called it off. And if it was, I have no doubt that the decision was made for the right reasons.
.
We all get frustrated when games are postponed, but looking to blame people instead of accepting that sometimes we just can't beat nature is completely futile.

Thanks for the sympathetic note!! Arrived in Swindon at 8.00am and leaving early Tuesday so I can't get to the Barnet game. Really disappointed - but not as disappointed as I was after the Wembley non-event 18 months ago.

But its a great season we are having and I just watched the goals for Southend to put a smile back on my face.

I'll be back for the final home game of the season and looking forward to one heck of a party that day!!

Seriously though. I was on hold for 95 minutes and lucky enough to get through. The issue I have is I have just paid almost £10 to a premium rate telephone number just to get them. Although I love this club, I don't like being ripped off by the club nor its telecommunication 'partners'.

Is your letter to tell him what a great club we ave and an amazing job he is doing and what a great job Paolo is doing and how you are fully behind them...

Or to complain about paying 10p a minute to a premium rate line that tells you it cost that much before you stay on the line.... and you choose to stay on rather than drive to the CG and queue in the cold with the other people who sont want to call a premium rate number...

That's the price you pay for not getting there at 5.30am and getting served at 10.30am. Personally I think the club should have closed the phones as there were people queueing from 6am that are unlikely to have got tickets.
*
I think that the club do need to do something about this ludicrous ticket situation. People shouldn't have to be camping out and queueing at 5.30am to get tickets. It's the 21st Century FFS. Other clubs manage it so the hard core that go to every game get tickets and other ST holders put in an application. This could have been done months ago. Maybe this is worth writing to Wray about?

While I have sympathy for those who queued for hours and may be left without getting a ticket, there are some season ticket holders with commitments etc. who cannot get to the ground to join the queue, for them the only possibility is phone booking, I know I am one.
Didn't know if I would get answered and have a chance but after 1 and a half hours got through and now have the 2 I was after.
When the number of tickets are so scant, and we know who the blame that on, there will also be problems and dissappointment on how the ticket sales are done.

I was looking forward to the game too. If I misunderstood your post, I apologise. But it was you who gave us the history lesson. I was just adding my opinion to your version of history. I agree with you that Health & Safety regulations are overboard these days. It's just that I couldn't see your point in raising them, as it seems the game was called off because of a dangerous pitch - something that would have happened long before Health & Safety regulations were even thought of.
.
I thought you were having a serious go about Health & Safety and the ref, but if your whole post was meant to be a joke I'm sorry to have been so slow on the uptake.

Shame the game was called off, especially for fans travelling from further a field. However, I went to the Crawley cup game last year when the pitch was frozen and it was about -7 but the game carried on due to ESPN. It was a really poor game as understandibly the players didn't want to pick up an injury and so not really going in full blooded. Annoying yes but would be much worse if Wes had done himself harm diving in a frozen penalty box.

Well done to the club for being decisive and making an early inspection. Have to get underway by 10.30-11am latest from London, if the day in Wiltshire is also to include a couple of beers.

Think it was optimistic thinking that a tent would stave off sub-zero temperatures, ice and frost - hope we didn't spend too much money on that dome.

They could have just put this Forum under the pitch instead, given the amount of hot air on it!

If you wanted to go you should have had to make the effort to get down to the CG like the majority of people and tough it out. How fair is it that a number of people stood there since 8am and wont get a ticket whilst others can ring from their bed, with a cup of tea and a cooked breakfast and get a ticket!!

There are many fine examples of a heated dome working. Rugby clubs use them often to much success, the heated dome comes from bath and was an invention by mike felton.
- the best results from the heated dome is to install it either before or at the time of the adverse weather. A heated dome simulates a polytunnels temparature in summer, thus keeps any cold ground out, and avoids flooding. So it would have worked, but essentially came in a day late.
.
Depending on how many of these domes bath has will be detriment to the grounds recovery in time for tuesday night.
- as for tents sheilding frost. Contact Terra Nova, they will tell you how.
.
Another option is pipelind radiation, a method of using a lower pressure fire hose covering said surface and which the hose is continually pumped with high temp water. It is imperative this technique is used upto an hour before the surface is needed.

Then maybe someone forgot to hammer the tent pegs in then, because it didn't bloody well work!

Hopefully when the ground development goes ahead some sort of undersoil heating along the lines you mention will be incorporated. I don't know what the cost is of postponing and rescheduling a game, but there must be costs that can be offset against some of these heating schemes.
