SWINDON TOWN: We deserve it - Di Canio

WEMB-GLEE: Town fans invade the pitch after the 1-0 win over Barnet WEMB-GLEE: Town fans invade the pitch after the 1-0 win over Barnet

PAOLO Di Canio hopes he can go some way to easing the hurt of the 2010 play-off final defeat by guiding Swindon to victory at Wembley after the Robins booked their place in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final with a win over Barnet last night.

Alan Connell’s 17th-minute header gave Town a 1-0 win on the night and 2-1 victory on aggregate to ensure it will be Di Canio’s side that take on Chesterfield at the country’s national stadium on March 25.

Swindon have endured some tough times in recent years, losing out on a place in the Championship to Millwall two years ago, before suffering relegation to the basement division last season.

And having now achieved a personal dream of taking Town to Wembley, he now wants to help put smiles back on the faces of the club’s fans once again with victory over Chesterfield.

“It was an amazing night,” said the 43-year-old. “The fans deserve to go to Wembley, they were the best throughout this competition. It is a very good moment and now we have to keep going.

“It is a very important moment with Swindon fans going to Wembley again after what happened there last time and I hope we can win there this time.”

Last night’s hard-fought win was just reward for a Town side that have taken the competition seriously right from the outset.

With Swindon faring considerably better in League Two than Barnet, there were fears that complacency could prove the players undoing at the final hurdle.

However, their determination and desire should never have been in doubt and Di Canio was keen to ensure his players took plenty of the plaudits.

“I said straight away we would take this competition seriously from the start,” he added. “This is the only come we can realistically win and we proved that what we said at the beginning was true.

“The lads kept the message I sent to them in their brain from the very first moment.

“The squad are the protagonists and they deserve all the credit. They suffer on the field and they give everything.

“The rest of the people around us help as well. The technical staff and the board all made sacrifices and I am very happy for them and the 1000s of people who hopefully sleep now with a smile and look forward to travelling to Wembley.”

Town have been allocated just over 36,000 tickets at the west end of the stadium for the showpiece.

I unfortunately couldn't make the game last night, but did watch on tv, the commentators didn't stop saying how good Swindon were and in his interview Lawrie Sanchez said that they were beaten by the best league in the division, too **** right.
Some of the football we played was outstanding and I can only see us getting better. The fans were totally amazing and I applaud each and every one of you lucky enough to be there, all I could hear the whole match was you guys singing your hearts out, even had me singing to the telly. Looking forward to Wembley. Poalo you are a god, the team are your warriors and the board are your council.

Brilliant stuff and thanks to all associated with the club. Now, how can we persuade Paolo to register as a player so that if possible, whereby we have a comfortable lead at Wembley, he can come on for a 5 minute cameo appearance and fulfil one of his ambitions? I know it's unlikely but if anyone ever deserved anything this man does! As for me, I have to attend a wedding on the big day!!!!

Made it a quiet occupation to extract the urine in a discrete manner, taking the P at every opportunity.

I've only missed two home games this season, one when my MUM died and last night as I couldn't get a suitable carer for my wife.

Don't worry, I'm too old, stubborn and downright awkward to change, a bit like PDC, my way or no way !

I'm surrounded by yellow peril, but just like last night, milk bottles out, and a big shout, RED ARMY !!! and they get it most Saturdays as well when me and my mate get back here, out the car, down the drive "RED ARMY" all the way, Make 'em "Ave It".

Wife has a Mobility car now, and its RED, very RED indeed, just so they know where we stand.

Wembley bound with me dad, me son and me best mate(s) and the biggest family of fans I know.

I think PDC has done an amazing job for this club, and the players deserve so much credit, I want to say how proud I was of Caddis and connell, coming through all of the supporters on the pitch to clap every side of the ground, that guy is a great Captain for this club. I hope he lifts this cup at Wembley because things like that can keep the players at this club for years to come.

I hope that some of those supporters come back next home game, this is a very special time at this club, with Jay wray at the helm and the board backing Paolo and for once not taking cash for our best players.

Not only do we deserve it, just so happy our manager takes a contrarian view to most that cups are important. For the fans but most especially for revenue. Extraordinary that we had over 10,400 last night and Southampton had 8.5k for FA Cup replay last night.

Winning the final could make the difference between keeping a player or signing one for next year. Delighted all round and if I can get them I'll be bringing loads of my mates who support other teams to Wembley.

Special mention for Connell as well, has worked so very hard in so many games with little or no reward, on the training ground he must always put a shift in to get picked, if there was ever a time to score a goal that mattered, last night was that time. I hope he will hold the memory of that goal very dear, because it got his club to a cup final at Wembley.
Very well done, reward at last.

I believe Saturday's game is more important. I enjoyed last night's game for what it was - a good game of football - and I enjoyed the atmosphere. The temperature must have been nearly as low as it was for the Crawley game last season but the entertainment last night helped keep the cold at bay. However, if we are 1-0 up at 90 minutes on Saturday and the ref decides to add on 5 minutes of injury time, I know I'll feel a tension that I didn't feel last night.

Great result. PDC firmly in the shop window after last nights display and current league position. I think this years apprenticeship may be enough to bag him a spot further up the football league after the season ends. No one knows for sure at this stage and we'd hope he'd at least give STFC another season as back to back promotions says a lot about a manager. The board will have to put their hand in their pocket in order to back some extra quality for League 1 but the basic side we have is better than a lot in L1.

The current top 4 in L1 have all done very well and the chasing pack are all very competitive. I'm sure the points tally only tells part of the story and Wilson's team are there in the mix as well having played less games. There are some good players there, and we will need the same, it looks as if those top teams are all up to a very high standard week in week out, we will need to match that.

I read a few posts of here the other day talking about the Wembley atmosphere (or lack of). I suggest that all those in The Town End and everyone else who wants to sing and make lots of noise and dare I say it, get out of their seats occassionally, get behind the goal at Wembley (The Wembley Town End). This way we'll make lots of noise behind the goal and hopefully that should sprea throughout the crowd. We need to make sure this happens to avoid to dull vacuous atmosphere that was the League 1 Play Off Final. Start the campaign everyone!!

Aye, no doubt if we had a section at the Milwall game, things would have been different. The lads need support so lets ensure we can give it to them. Who knows, if we have one section singing maybe some day trippers ill in?!!

As well as the tackle there was a very clear head butt . I was right in line and thank goodness that animal wont be playing this Saturday.

On another topic I was sat next to an ex manager of a biggish local team and he relayed some very good info to me. This guy told me that the player we have out with a serious injury is not suffering from the injury as reported. The injury that he has is a cracked cheekbone which he obtained by being decked by an ex Town youth player, who himself is a big lad.
Believe it or not but this well respected person told me and another guy that the story was perfectly true.

Back to the game , and what a game !! absolutely brilliant especially in the first half. It seems that Sanchez told his players to get out there and mix it in the second half which they clearly did. Glad we don't have to play thugs like this every week.
I thought all four officials last night were excellent. 4th official never spoke to Paolo once, at last someone with common sense and discretion.

Bl00dy hell it was freezing last night! there I was watching the game from my lofty perch high up on the bar stool of the Plough in Highworth and when I went for a Jimmy at half time I was fair shrammed by a trip to the outside khazi,

From the fish eye lens, thought Devera & Ritchie excelled and Town were worthy if not totally inspiring winners.

Congrats to PDC and the players for making the final and generating some handy revenue dosh-hope the boys go on and win it. I'll probably have a glance at the final on Sky but won't be making the trip to the most souless stadium in the world for a minor minnows cup final -just doesn't do it for me - FA Cup, League or play-off and I would have put my dislike of Wembley aside and gone. Like some of the other old codgers I've been spoilt by past cup exploits and the JPT dosn't do it for me nor did it when it was the LDV and goodness knows before that!

Hope all the young 'uns have a good day out and return with the trophy, and me? well I'd have happily exchanged a Wembley spot for 3 points v the Bees on Saturday if that had been on offer before the game last night.

I wouldn't want to be a bog-roll cup winner in L2 next season!

Why so touchy about it? Midland red said Saturday's game is just as important as last night's. Some of us think Saturday's is more important.
.
It's good to win any match, and it's good to win any trophy. Come the end of the season though, nobody will be too disappointed if we've lost the JPT final and won promotion. If it's the other way round - we've won the JPT and are still in the basement - I don't think too many of us will be pleased with life. That's the distinction some of us are trying to make.
.
I am delighted for PDC and I'm delighted for the players that they have the chance to go to Wembley. I'm not sure that a competition with an average attendance of 3,200 (boosted a little by last night's gate) is worthy of a Wembley final though.

Spot on. I had a very close view of the challenge. No need to wait for the card. We just looked at each other and said "He's off". As one or two others have said, the ref had a good game. Don't think he could be blamed for not giving a pen for the shove on Connell. He would have had to have been standing in the 6 yard box to have had a good view of that. It's a pity players cheat so much nowadays. If refs didn't have to bear diving in mind, Deadman would have been able to tell from Connell's fall that he had been shoved.

Not being touchy - just don't get the whole comparing the importance of games/competions thing.

Also I will be very happy if we go up, which we will. I'll still be disappointed if we lose the JPT Final though!

However you are right in saying that if we win the JPT and end up not going it will be an absolute disaster.

Our main objective is to win automatic promotion, I expect us to win the league (still want to win the JPT though...)

On a different note fair play the Barnet fans you gave it a good go, unlike your team whom LS has seemingly inspired with old wimbledon videos to play Head Tennis and shin kicking. The game, Lawrie ,is called Football where you attempt to pass to a team member who then runs in the direction of the opp. goal passing the ball if he can.

Keep your unarmed combat for the local martial arts or boxing club.

The biggest reason why STFC need up and out of that Div.

Excellent state of affairs at the County Ground at the moment. You Reds!

So why does my train of thought return to Capello meeting the FA this afternoon? And why do I feel so confident that England will be looking for a new manager before the Euro Champs... or even this week?

And that the FA return to type and state they want an Englishman... and Redknapp, raw from today's court case, decides he wants stability and re-commits to Spurs?

Leaving the FA looking down their previous list and offering it to the English manager with the highest placed club with most to gain from accepting, ie Sam Allardyce.

Leaving West Ham without a manager. And...Oh! I can't bear to carry it to it's conclusion.

In the first half, the ball had disappeared up the pitch and everyone's attention, including the ref was up with the play, one of their players gave Caddis a kick right on the shin. Caddis to his credit did not react, he just walked away. I guess the result is his last laugh.

It's a thankless job Don - a managers' graveyard. There's a reason we've won s0d all for nearly 46 years. We're not good enough. Almost every manager who's taken the job on has come into it with a good reputation and left it with that reputation tarnished. But it can't be the manager's fault every time. I reckon Redknapp or any other successful manager in comfortable employment would be bonkers to take it.

I have to say I don't really see the link between the JPT and L2. L2 is our bread and butter obviously but the JPT is a bit of fun but we now have a one-off game at Wembley with good money to be earned from winning, and now we are there I will be disappointed if we don't win. Up to the Barnet games I couldn't have cared less about the competition though.

Have to say that I never wear a coat or jumper but wear a t-shirt under my STFC shirt and last night was the only night except for the Cup match v Crawley last year where I felt bloomin freezin at the end.
--
That was all offset by the satisfaction of seeing off a very nasty Barnet side - as per others I hope we have a very strong referee again on Saturday as I can see them continuing on a theme.
--
Being honest, given the weather forecasts I can't see Barnet getting the game on - I may be being unfair to them but their facilities don't scream at it being frost resistant.

Now we must push on with our league form to ensure we stay on the road to the Championship - Saturday's game is just as important. COYR
I agree with Den Saturday's game is more important!thinking of going to Barnet, but the weather forecast for the London area at the weekend is not looking good!so the game could be off.on another subject Redknap has been cleared of all charges!so we should sack Capello and put Harry in charge for the Euro's asap!!!!!!!!

Agreed Oxford Mike, reckon we need to get all us singers together in one area of the ground, how about sections 132 - 135???
Not sure that is the best policy as we want chants bouncing round the stadium - bunch 2000 hard core singers in 3 pockets around the 3 sides and you'll get others joining in. MikeK - I'm sure there are many others in your position in these dark economic days. Those who decry others for not attending are probably those who have never had to worry about tightening their belts because their level of disposable income hasn't been unduly affected.

You have no obligation to defend your non attendance and your purchase of a season ticket is evidence of your committment to supporting the club and if (hopefully it won't) next season you are unable to do so, your support is no less valuable than the die hard with no financial considerations who attends every game in every competition home and away - best regards and trust things will soon be on the up for you and Mrs Mike and all others similarly affected.”

Hi Malkym yes my friend I found the reply and I must say a very heartwarming reply to my comments made on the harsh reality of the financial world I was living in and like you said many others also. That was an excellent post of yours Malkym, and one that makes quite a statement in that fans should not be categorized on a supporter level just on their attendance of football matches. This was my main point that a fan should never be deemed any lesser of a fan for not attending a match than one who did attend when there can be justified reasons. Financial reasons can determine ones attendance as was my case and plus there are many many other possible reasons why fans can not attend, but the main point here was no fan should be less thought of for not going. I know many fans who support and love the club and never go to matches which is due to poor health, financial, working, too far away, just to name a few, but does this make them any lesser fans than those that attend. Many thanks for your nice comments at the end of you post by the way.

Mike you're welcome and my comments were in no way meant to be patronising, they were directed at those few who assume that if you don't attend every game you are some sort of traitor. They of course have simply not considered the picture we both have painted.

And....also even if there are no finance problems some folk me included might choose to attend another major sporting event that clashes with a Town game - ~Ascot, Cheltenham - 6 nations rugby etc..and just because they miss a game or two does not diminish their support in the same manner.

So here's to good fortune to all and inthe words of the legend that is Grim -onwards & upwards!

I actually met Stephen Lewis and the cast of The Summer Wine some years ago, we were all staying at The Huddersfield Hotel. I was doing some contract work in the town on some CNC machines at a kitchen and bathroom manufacturer.

I bumped into Steve as we met on some narrow stairs, he looked straight at me and just said " Go on then, say it, everyone else does", and the pair of us just burst out laughing, really nice bloke, as were the others very sociable. My missus couldn't believe it till I showed her a picture of myself and many cast members on my old mobile phone. This was a series after the passing of Compo, big shame. Photo's there of Les Dawson and many others in that hotel, great place, brilliant atmosphere.
As for hating Butler, nah, it would take up too much time and energy, and hate is a nasty thing to have on board, my life is too full and doesn't have enough room for hate.

I have passions in my life, my wife, my family, STFC and when her health returns to somewhere near normal, travel in our motor home. Hate is consuming, and is probably left where it is, but I do understand your sentiments and they are appreciated.

Now, washing up, bed making, a bit of hoovering, pick up some prescriptions and prepare the evening meal, mop the kitchen and dining room floors(Spanish tiles), unload the washing machine and air the contents, that should take me a while, so I'll see yer later buddy, Cheers.

Wow how ironic is that Wiz I bet those are good memories indeed. Summer Wine is brilliant and love watching those series. Quite right about the hate word there is far too much bad going on in our world today without bearing grudges but one person has really got up my nose and I needed to just let off some steam. How come JB then that you were the only person to take offence to what Wizard JOKINGLY said about Alfie Potter. You mate are almost becoming a stalker and could not resist trying to make an issue out of something that no one else was bothered about. More to the point it was another pathetic attempt to have a dig at Wizard who you seem to be infatuated with. To Be honest I care less about Alfie Potter or any Pox player and don't think any Town fans give a sh*t either.
