SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio banished to stands for crucial Crawley clash

OFF DAY: Paolo Di Canio is sent to the stands against Macclesfield OFF DAY: Paolo Di Canio is sent to the stands against Macclesfield

PAOLO Di Canio will watch Tuesday’s crunch League Two clash with promotion rivals Crawley from the stands after the Italian was hit with a two-match ban yesterday.

The 43-year-old had received his second charge of improper conduct last month after being sent to the stands in the 1-0 win over Macclesfield on January 21.

Di Canio had vehemently denied any wrongdoing and vowed to defend himself if he was given any kind of punishment.

However, his protestations ultimately proved fruitless, with the FA yesterday handing him a two-match ban and a fine.

It means that Di Canio will not be in his technical area for the crucial game with Crawley and the trip to Hereford next Saturday.

Despite his absence from the dugout, Di Canio has urged fans to again pack out the County Ground on Tuesday night.

Over 10,000 supporters turned out for the 1-0 win over Barnet earlier this week, a result that sent Town through to the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

And Di Canio believes the fans will be crucial once again as Swindon look to climb back into the automatic promotion places.

“I hope the fans can come and support us again like they did for the game against Barnet because that made it feel like a final in a way,” he said.

“Every time we are going to play against a side who are close to us in the table it is crucial for the stadium to be full.”

Swindon are without a fixture for the second successive Saturday today after the game against Barnet was called off yesterday due to a frozen pitch.

The postponement adds to an already congested backlog of fixtures, meaning Town are set to play a number of games in quick succession over the next two months.

But Di Canio is unconcerned by the pile up of games, and has faith in his players to be able to cope with the situation.

“There is lots of enthusiasm in this side and if it was up to them they would play every day,” he added. “This helps us even though we know in the long run playing every Tuesday and Saturday could maybe put us in a situation where two or three players could be very quiet in a couple of games, but this is normal.

“We are in a good position so I am happy. I would obviously choose to play, but I am okay at the moment.

“We have handled the situation well so far because we won five league games in a row and lost only to Leicester in the FA Cup.

“At the moment I feel that we have handled this situation better than other clubs, because whenever we have a game postponed we don’t have two days off. We use the time to work hard both tactically and physically because we need to.”

Certainly feels like we only play at home on Tuesdays - 5 from the next 6 home games are Tuesday.
--
I feel sorry for those that won't be able to make the games due to work during the week - some big games coming up.

BIG BIG game on Tuesday and bigger than last Tuesday's in my mind but will we be able to get above 8,000 this time?
Full price tickets will prevent many and doubts over the weather may deter others but lets hope we get a good crowd!

Really?

STFC should recognise this and make some concessions maybe?

Evening matches always special at the CG,we will win of course.

I can't see the crowds getting much over 8,000 on Tuesday with the tickets being full price and, no doubt, the weather being cold.

Let's just hope the game is on!

Wenger kicking a water bottle in a fury.....No Punishment.
Ferguson....screamin
g at forth officials, Refs and anyone else....No Punishment.
Fatty Evans punching a hole through the Cheltenham away changing room door....no Punishment.
PDC....waving his arms at HIS players in HIS technical area....2 match ban.
Suarez...calling someone a name EIGHT MATCH ban, Terry not even found guilty yet...stripped of his captaincy....yet if you are a player who stamps on, kicks or spits in the face of another player you will probably get a TWO match ban.....same punishment as Dicanio!!!!

So in the views of the FA......violence is a lesser charge than a bit of name calling or a passionate Manager getting his views over to his players....

PATHETIC!!!!

Yeah! Move along the terrace please!

We should re build the CG by the way, like La Bombanera, the Boca Juniors stadium in Argentina.

Really high stands, towering over the pitch not using space width ways.

I think its either us or the creeps for the 2nd div title - apart from us they have the strongest squad

This makes tuesday the biggest game of the year and we need our 12th man - the strongest singing fans in the world to ensure the win - dont forget that they rarely play in front of 3000 - so 10000 at the CG should blow them away

STFC fans - the biggest tonsils

Woolstero,

I travelled with you, to & from Wembley for the Millwall game and, I thought all was well organised. In fact I came to your place to pay and pick up my ticket.
What spoilt the day for me (apart from the result) was the return journey.
The gobby loud-mouths at the front of the coach who seemed intent on demonstrating that they knew every foul word in the English language and incessantly repeated them at the tops of their inebriated voices.
I can cuss with the best (or worst) of them, but hope I'm smart enough to know when this is or is not appropriate.
There were kids and young ladies on the bus, to say that the gobby's language was inappropriate is gross understatement.
I just wish I'd had a baseball bat with me.
