Marine chairman in the dark over Wood move

SUPERMARINE could be without Sean Wood as they take on fellow strugglers Arlesey in the Southern Premier tonight.

It has been reported that the midfielder had switched to Hellenic Premier outfit Shortwood United, but Marine joint bosses Gary Horgan and Matt Robinson were yesterday unaware of such a move, and the club have subsequently denied knowledge of a deal going through.

Chairman Keith Yeomans said: “I spoke to Gary and he knows Sean was speaking to Shortwood, but hasn’t heard anything from him.

“Reading between the lines, I think Shortwood have put the signing out before we’ve been told.”

Wood, a former New College and Cirencester man, has made 23 first team appearances this season, scoring three goals. But he has played less of late, starting just once in the last four games.

It is expected that even if a move has been completed, or is completed, Marine will retain his registration so that he is still able to play Southern Premier football.

The Webb’s Wood side are rooted to the bottom of the table ahead of tonight’s game, but victory will lift them above local rivals Cirencester.

They may have to do without forward Steve Cook, who has returned from the United States but is struggling with injury, while midfielder Jamie Prictor is away.

Marine’s last two fixtures may have been postponed due to the cold weather, but tonight’s game should go ahead as planned.

While there was plenty of surface water on the pitch after recent snow melted, volunteers having been forking the ground to get rid of it.

And with the forecast relatively mellow for Wednesday, it is understood that there should be no problem in fulfilling the fixture, which is Marine’s first since January 28.
