FULL TIME: Town 3 Crawley 0

SWINDON saw off another of their promotion rivals with a fine 3-0 win over Crawley at the County Ground tonight.

Town's last league game ended with the Robins brushing aside Southend 4-1 and they followed that up superbly with a dominant performance against Steve Evans' side.

Luke Rooney opened the scoring in the first half before strikes from Billy Bodin and Paul Benson rounded off the win.

Here are the key moments from today.

2 mins: There is a slight scare early on for Town when a good Crawley move ends with Dean Howell’s cross clipping the crossbar with Wes Foderingham beaten.

9 mins: Half-chance for the hosts when Luke Rooney whips in a deep cross that flies just over the head of Matt Ritchie inside the Crawley box.

18 mins: Paul Benson cleverly flicks the ball into the path of Billy Bodin just inside Crawley’s half and the forward looks to beat Claude Davis to race through on goal, but he is hauled down by the defender. Referee Mark Haywood gives Davis a yellow card.

25 mins: The hosts have the ball in the back of the net when Paul Benson prods home from close range. However, the striker was in an offside position after Rooney’s shot had hit him just in front of goal.

38 mins (GOAL, Rooney 1-0): Town are ahead when they are awarded a free kick around 30 yards from goal and Alessandro Cibocchi’s excellent strike smashes against the crossbar, but Rooney is on hand to fire home, with his effort hitting the post on its way into the net.

45 mins: Wes Foderingham pulls off two saves in relatively quick succession, first pushing over a Tyrone Barnett header before then getting a hand to Kyle McFadzean’s close range effort.

53 mins (GOAL, Bodin 2-0): Eight minutes into the second half and Town extend their lead courtesy of a stunning effort from Bodin. After Crawley fail to deal properly with a succession of corners the Wales Under-21 international fires home an unstoppable drive from outside the area.

58 mins: Billy Clarke curls a free kick from a dangerous position straight into the hands of Foderingham.

68 mins (GOAL, Benson 3-0): However it is Swindon who go even further ahead when Alan McCormack embarks in a storming run into the area, plays a one-two with Bodin, before sending a low ball into the area that Benson pokes into the net from close range.

Great win and in the end we were worthy of the points. Creepies looked a very good side first half but in the end we could have had 7 to be honest and Crawley faded. What on earth are these officials on that Ref had to be one of the worse ever seen at the County Ground. And Fat man Evans never left the 4th official alone all game and waving his arms about so the FA are just a bunch of one sided hypocrites. McCormack and Devera simply outstanding tonight with Maca MOM. But all played very well and Rooney and Bodin were excellent and will we see a better goal than Bodins second half strike what a goal. Fods simply best keeper outside the premiership and Caddis and Ritchie were fantastic again. Like I said all the players gave their all tonight and well done STFC magnificent win. 6-0 to the mighty reds on aggregate should have shut fat boy Evans up for good. Cox did well when he came on and looks like a tough lad and got better as the game went on great addition to the squad.

6-0 TO THE CIRCUS!!!

What more can you say about this amazing side? First 20 minutes we struggled to cope with the blood and thunder contest, but cope we eventually did. Second half class told. So it doesn't matter what the opposition throws at Swindon, our guys come up with the goods.

There were too many heroes to name a man of the match, but can't argue with the marvel called Alan McCormack. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife, and he thrived on it, and still had time to be a left winger to create the third goal.

And Foderingham is just different class. Several good saves then two wonder stops as they pounded us just before half time, the second immediately reminded me of Gordon Bank's save from Pele - he had no right get to that ball!

Thank you, Mr Evans. The siege mentality raised the roof at times, not least when the whole ground rose to Paolo when the Emperor stood to acknowledge his admirers.

Oh, and to see Ritchie bust a gut in injury time to get back and tackle as if it was only 1-0.

It was blood and guts -
it was class football -
it was pure theatre!

In the words of Jim Bowen -great smashing super! Nervous tentative start and slightly fortunate to be 1-0 up at half time as Crawley looked useful two good saves from Wes.

Second half after Paolo's pep talk, as he said in his post match interview -we were too shy in the first half- every player grew in stature -Benson found his touch and Bodin's goal was a cert from the minute it left his boot. No argument with Alan Mac as MOM but all deserved credit battliing for every ball against a team intent on spoiling fouling and time wasting.

I don't normally make any comments about the referee but tonight's official was appalling and was in serious danger of losing control of the game. His numerous pauses and delays in restarting play after a stoppage were unbelievable and although I didn't have a good view the foul on Bodin when he was clean through surely bordered on a straight red.

According to the Crawley local paper, Evans is quoted as saying that his team were in it until the Referee "got involved" and that the match assessor "is going to report Swindon". What a fat Scottish t*sser that man is. He was chipping away at the 4th Official quite often during the game.

How did Claude Davis stay on after what was a blatant RED.

I think the ref is on Evans dirty payroll. They were the dirtiest bunch of players to come here this season, and it seems they have caught the "protest everything" culture from the despicable Evans and his disgusting road show.

If we can beat these and their tactics then I think its fair to say we can beat most, if not all. Thought Cox had a brilliant impact almost immediately, and Benson so unlucky on many occasions.

Hope Ferry soon recovers from whatever is ailing him, he didn't look his best, so get well soon Simon. Good to know we have such a squad where anyone can be effectively replaced. Cibbo looked lightweight to start but improved as the game went on, and Devera, another good shift, growing into the task more and more each week.

Arkells side lino in the first half definitely blind not to see their goalie infringing every time he kicked out, hand ball. Officials very weak, spineless and ineffective, but we only get sh#t refs and tonight he was from the top of the pile.

The unsung hero of the night is fabrizio. He kept his cool all night amid the joke that is the Crawley bench and really deserves the man of the match award. Super night for all. Crawley a circus, diving, cheating and all on the bench up in arms jumping about. I believe Evans at one point was giving our players direct verbal, especially Ritchie. We were professional and outclassed their rugby tactics and long ball. All players did well but I will say this about fodders between the sticks. I haven't seen every keeper in league 1 or the champ so unfair to say he is the best and get carried away. But, he is pure class through and through.

Wiz, whilst the ref was poor, two of the things you criticised him for he actualy got right!

You cant give a red for denying a goalscoring opportunity on the halfway line.

When Kuipers kicked the ball, it had left his hand inside the area, even though it made contact with his foot outside the area - which is legal and most keepers (including Wes) do it.

Castle9,

Ok, you had a better view and thanks for the correction, but some of their tackles easily did deserve a yellow, but the flip side of that is once you have issued one where do you stop, but he should have took a much firmer stance a lot earlier in the game as it was always going to be techey in the least because of what was at stake.

As for Evans behaviour, just how does he get away with it week in week out.

Great result against a very physical team that didn't give us any space. The was the most pleasing aspect for me was that we created chances despite the constant pressure on the player with the ball.
Crawlet were a decent side but they relied very heavily on the long throw and high ball to the front two. It took time but we found how to deal with it and second half they rarelt threatened, testament to the back four.
Thought Benson was fantastic and Bodin showed some lovely touches and it was fitting they both scored.
Midfield was solid and the new lad looks a good prospect. Bit concerned that Ferry was taken off so early, he wasn't really at the races today, did he take a knock or is he still suffering from last week's affliction ?

Win at Hereford on Saturday is important now as it open a gap between us and increase the pressure on Crawley.

Six clean sheets on the trot at home in the league now, another ten would seal promotion IMO !

Couple of bits - a quote from teh Crawley Obs.

"A quiet start to the match exploded to life when last man Claude Davis was only booked for hauling Bodin down on the halfway line as the Swindon striker was released and looked clean through."

Even their paper sounds a bit surprised at that.

Secondly, yes if the ball has left the hand before stepping outside the box it's OK, teh latter ones were OK - but a lot of the early ones need to be looked at again! What happens is that most linesmen as the kick is abou to be taken have already turned and started sprinting up teh touchline to catch up with the back line and never see the over step, all keeper get away with it, and that includes Wes.

Saying that a great result - Crawley came out to bully, hassle and throw the team of their game, almost worked in teh first half, but held it together.

Second half you could see who teh footballing team was. Caddis had calmed down from teh diatribe that Evans was giving him in the first half & calming the team down (esp. Ritchie) to calm & just play to the ref - everytime someone was taken out, hands doing the calm down pat & pointing to the ref & saying let him run it.

Got into Crawleys game in the first & then made them try and match ours in teh second - on contest really.

I know we have won nothing yet but that was the performance of champions. Any team that finishes above Crawley won't be far away from the winning the title, they had power, pace, and probably everything a 'good league 2' side. However we were resilient, matched them (once Cox came on) and then handed them another beating with some superb creative play down both flanks and tidy finishing.

Again the whole side were superb, but my 1-2-3 were

1) Macca and Devera - yes two players I know but both were outstanding. Devera's best game yet and Macca well he was just class.

2) Benson - The highly regarded Bennett and Watt on the Creepy side huffed and puffed but they would have done well to make a few notes on how to play up front looking at the performance of Benson. Against 2 monsters at the back he won virtually everything in the air, and ran his heart out. He seems to link well with everyone he plays with and scored 1 could have had 2.

3) Fodders - a bit busier than usual but 2 world class saves at the end of the first half.

As I say the whole team did well, great debut from Cox, and what a strike from Billy! Looks a very good decision not to let him return to Turkey (as Paolo pronounces it!)

As for Steve Evans, I thought he and his crony were a disgrace. What an unpleasant way to represent your club and what a terrible example to set. It is performances like that which really does the FA no favours as they send off Paolo for a bit of arm waving, yet Tweedledum and Teeedledee with their synchronised elbows, stamping and 'Christ on the cross' poses at every (and I mean every) opportunity go unpunished, again. Disgraceful. The fourth official must have needed an ice pack on his ear at half time what an ear-bashing. And to say the ref got involved, well he did us no favours so I'm not what he's on about there. I can only think he didn't take kindly to a bit of celebrating by him after the goals, Evra - Suarez style, but he should be big enough to take it on the chins.

Yes, agreed, but those thunder bolts were not seen by the majority so they are to a point not aware of what we are missing. Just wish we could utilize all that talent somehow, but he does seem to drift in and out of the game and that is something we cannot afford. Big shame.

A few comments from me. I was at the game and I fail to understand why the defender who brought down Bodin did not get sent off. Maybe a qualified referee could state what the rules are on here but he looked to be the last defender.
The ref last night was letting there Goalie waste lots of time with his kicks . I remember the Ref in the Wigan game put a stop to that by Booking Al Habsi so I was hoping to see the same last night.
On the plus side for Swindon , the Ref took no action when McCormack was involved in a shoving match near the end. Other refs may have booked him .
The spirit with the team and supporters is fantastic and really is special. Long may it continue under PDC.

You make a good point which many have debated, our car was full of exactly this debate coming home last night, but when you start dishing out yellows where do you stop ? that is the other side of the coin.

Ritchie also got a bit tenacious towards the end of the game and the ref just had a word, had he started to dish out yellows earlier, Matt may have got one.

Caddis, doesn't he just get better and better by the game, had a good rapport with the ref, and probably stopped many cards being dished out, for which Crawley should be very grateful. It just shows that we rose above all of their rubbish, and tried to promote football instead of rugby and it was football that won.

I agree with all you say, but having had a few hours since to calm down and reflect, the ref although weak, had a better game than most of us think, that said I'd prefer NOT to see him again this season.

It was noticeable that Caddis wasn't taking many throw-ins, I wonder if he may have had an upperbody strain or was it tatical, Richie definitely looked like he could throw it further, but didn't look like he really wanted to take them. The guys taking throws for Crawley were getting a fair bit of distance, their game against Stoke will be very much who can launch the biggest and most effective throws.

Be nice if we had a Bobby Woodruff who in his time was a revelation at launching balls in from the touchline.

I think diCanio has got these guys to a near peak now, and we are now "tweaking", and exploring options, so as to bring more flexibility into the side, all the time developing the players and their skills. We had become predictable with who was going to take throws and corners and so on, the more flexibility we have throws up more for our opponents to deal with and them guessing, don't you just love it ?

Last night has to go down as one of the most complete performances in many years, better even than beating Leeds.

Yes agree totally about the Crawley bench. Absolutely appauling behaviour from fat boy and his side kick and the verbal attack on Caddis and Ritchie first half was just shocking behavior and purposely done to wind the players up. No wonder our players celebrated their goals right in front of the Creepy bench and Evans was furious and waving his arms at the Ref. How on earth Paolo can be singled out when others get away with that circus last night is beyond me. And the fat boy accused us of bringing the circus to town when we played up there. What a complete and utter piece of garbage Evan is. Caddis was a magnificent captain last night and boy are we lucky to have him. Town let their football do the talking last night and rammed it right up Evans.
