SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio targets title and welcomes touchline ban

BREAKTHROUGH: Luke Rooney celebrates his opening goal against Crawley BREAKTHROUGH: Luke Rooney celebrates his opening goal against Crawley

PAOLO Di Canio has his sights set on claiming top spot in League Two after Swindon swept aside another promotion rival last night as they eased to a 3-0 win over Crawley.

The game was Town’s second six pointer in as many league fixtures after they had demolished Southend 4-1 two weeks ago, and a win for either side last night would provide a massive boost to their respective promotion aspirations.

However, it was Swindon who were to maintain their impressive home form as goals from Luke Rooney, Billy Bodin and Paul Benson sealed what was an ultimately comfortable win.

Town are now just one point behind the leading trio in League Two but have two games in hand over all of them, and Di Canio is now focused on moving into pole position as soon as possible.

“The best team won again,” he said. “We have more discipline and we have more options when we play.

“Now we are nearly at the top. In my opinion we are the best team in this league and we have shown something different to the other teams. In almost every game, we have dominated the opponents.”

Di Canio had to watch on from the stands as he served the first of his two-match ban, but he maintained his 100 per cent win record from watching games in that position.

“All the team made me happy, but I also want to thank the Football Association because they gave me the opportunity to watch the game from the stands,” he added.

“I didn’t have to do homework. Normally when I stay in the dugout I have to watch the game afterwards to have a more clear picture so once again I want to thank the FA. If they want to ban me for the rest of the season they can do that.

“I give them permission to ban me if they want to because my team know what they are doing, so it is fine.”

Crawley boss Steve Evans, who was jeered by Town fans each time he expressed dissatisfaction with a decision that went against his side, took a dim view of Di Canio’s comments.

“I wonder what the FA would say to me if I said that I did not care if I was going to be sent to the stands,” he said. “But I can’t say anymore than that now, it is not good.”

Evans has tried the mind games BS prior to both games and come massively unstuck. Obviously the Southend away game was a massive result, but this one really put a smile on my face, because like it or not, that ginger moron really did make it personal. He's been shown up for what he is, a small man, in charge of a club who also, despite their best efforts at buying their way into league football, will always be small as well. Wind ups on the touchline are no match for a club like town with great fans, a strong squad, fantastic manager, and the full support of the board behind him. You only came to watch the town, creepies!

You've got to love King Paolo. Special mention to Sir Wes. I know it's the whole team but another two class saves before half time yesterday. To be picked from the obscurity of 3rd string at Palace to play like he is in unbelievable. To my mind he is the best keeper I've seen in 26 years of supporting the Town and that includes Messrs Flowers and Given on loan.

To not to have conceded a home league goal in your career is sensational. Long may it continue.

Back to back promotions coming. Watching the birth of a managerial legend.

I cant express how much I hate Steve Evans...every time I think of him it makes my skin crawl and I get a sense of rising anger!!..anyway last night felt so so good!!..6-0 and 6 points thankyou very much Creepies!! Just sickening how stevey evans gets away with his antics during the game, vertually every game crawley have you hear about him winding up opposing managers and teams, it seems like the FA turn a blind eye. Anyway another awesome performance from our team, first half Crawley played the worst type of football ive ever seen, hoof, hoof, hoof and some more hoof!! secondhalf we totally dominated and deservedly got a couple more goals, a special mention to Billy Bodin with his out of this world goal it has to be a contender for goal of the season!! I must admit I did question Bodin starting when I saw the starting 11 but who am I to judge? again Di Canio reins as king!!....IN DI CANIO WE TRUST!!

All us Town fans love DC but I think Jeremy Wray should have a discreet word with DC, there is a time to say something and a time to keep quiet? I think the Fools from the FA will look for any excuse to punish both Swindon and DC in particular, he is definitely a marked 'man' and they will now look to other ways to punish him, and any excuse to do so will probably be seized upon! I don't really know what that malicious fat creature is alluding to but no doubt he will try he best to give the FA the excuse they are looking for? All the sweet talking crap from him before the game was just his attempt at mind games! Well done yet again to the boys and King Paolo! Another successful demolition of a team that are up there in the promotion race with us! And as for Mr.Bodin's contract running out end of season...I think I speak for everyone here when I sing....

Leaving aside sense of humour, I`ve watched matches from a sideline bench and I have no doubt that more DETAILS are visible from a decent position in a sidestand. I would rather pay £25 for a good seat in a sidestand than £10 to sit on a bench ! Others could have different preferences of course.

I've never wanted to jump over the hoardings before as much as I wanted to last night and smash that fat twonk one, his antics last night was disgraceful and if that is acceptable then the game really does need to have a complete overhaul, I don't know what his name is but his assistant is just as bad. They behaved like little kids, moaning about everything and trying to get our players in trouble and as soon as one of our players gave it back he went crying to the fourth official. The FA and some posters on here have got di canio all wrong...... After the 3rd Rooney celebrated on his own infront of evans and di canio went mental and spoke to his assistant who then had a word with Rooney..... Di canio knows what's right and what's wrong and he installs that into his players but because he is a passionate man he will defend himself, his players or the club when they are worth defending...... F**k the FA and whoever else wants to knock our club or manager who both have managed to make me feel very proud of my club that I support. I love listening to di canio and in my eyes he is a legend here, long may it continue and I just hope he hangs around for a fair few more years!

Enough said about Fatty Evans, we all know he is a crook and a disgrace to Football management.
Last night just showed how much the Town have become a force to be reckoned with.
3 goals clean sheet and again a double over one of the teams heading for auto promotion.
As for Billy Bodin wow what an excellent prospect,in all it was a team effort and must not be clouded by Fatty Evan's antics.Sooner or later he will get his reward.Did hear the Crawley Board are not to happy either.
When you look back to the first several games there were many who doubted Pdc, I was one and at the time said we needed an experienced manager at lower leauge level. How wrong was i like a few other posters.
So here we are 1 point adrift from top spot and up coming fixtures look favourable for the Town, so I do wish them well and what a gate last night, can see it creeping up more.
Well done Town

I dont like Evans but to be fair to him i have copied and pasted below his comments after the game:

"Manager Steve Evans felt Crawley's performance in the 3-0 defeat at promotion rivals Swindon was their worst for 18 months.

Swindon moved above the Red Devils into fourth spot and the hosts might have scored more goals near the end as reserve goalkeeper Michel Kuipers saved from Matt Ritchie.

"We were second best and were well beaten. This was the worst we have played in 18 months," said Evans. "We were never on the front foot and that is most unlike us.

"There were other factors, not least the way Swindon's players crowded the referee at every decision.

"In fairness Swindon have got a good side, good players and a good manager. They also worked their system very well.

"Overall I can have no complaints about the result, only with the way we played."

Seems he was complaining about our players and not the referee???

Steve Evans, a Scotsman with a Welsh name, but in reality he is the ultimate skid mark.

Just spoke to a mate who is an OU supporter and he was saying how they are NOT looking forwards to our visit.
Kerrouche, he says, laid on the winner for them last night and looked useful, but they were keeping tabs on our score all through their game, and then looked at Mehdi and are saying, he is good, so what have we got now which is better ? We have no fear of them now and they know it. Last nights score has them worried, very worried indeed.

Hopefully last night will be the undoing of Crawley, lets hope other teams were having them watched here and can see how to undo them, seeing them remain here in L2 would be very sweet indeed and even sweeter seeing Evans having to endure another season where he belongs, trapped in the basement.

I really wanted to post both my letter and teh response on here but the legal blag they attach prohibits me from posting any part of the reply they sent. however heres the letter i sent them, they cannot stop me from posting this.

"I am writing in disgust at the recent decision to give Poalo DiCanio a 2 match ban. Please explain to me what he has allegedly done to warrant this. I was at the game and saw nothing to warrant him being sent off during the game. Then you follow up this injustice with a 2 match ban, astonishing! Please also explain why other managers repeatedly do things far worse than gesticulate their passion and have no action taken against them. The likes of Ferguson, Wenger Dalgleish all seem to be able to do as they please, is it that the FA is just too scared to upset the big boys or even worse they don’t want to upset them because they make so much money from them. It’s about time the FA stood for the reasons they are in existence, to promote the good in football, fairly, passionately and above all honestly. Unfortunately instead of this the FA seems to be heading towards disgraceful absurdity that is FIFA. I would appreciate a balanced, honest reply to my questions.

An interesting point above about the Crawley board. Is Evans behaviour acceptable to them? I presume they are turning a blind eye due to him getting results, and to be fair he has put a decent team together, but by condoning it they are tarred with the same brush.

The chants at Evans at at the ground yesterday (and at the away game) while amusing were not pleasant or child-friendly, and if I was a football fan in the Crawley area I wouldn't take my kids to watch Crawley where the manager is getting dogs abuse, sworn at presumably week in week out.

Contrast that with Paolo, who's enthusiastic, and gets abuse from opposition fans, but in a different way. The only real time he seriously overstepped the mark for me was when celebrating in front of the Oxford fans when Ritchie scored. Yes the David Pleat style scuttle across the ground at Northampton was naughty but not malicious.

I think deep down 99% of fans in League 2 would like Paolo as their manager, and probably the same number would not like Evans as their manager.

Anyway if I was the Crawley board I know what I would do and he would be out the door. Success or not you cannot set such a bad example.

I’m still really buzzing after last night’s game – however much we hate Crawley, it has to be said that last night was a tough game where The Town showed fantastic resolve to stick with it and get the result.

Let’s be honest here – Crawley are a very decent team at this level and it was easy to see how they could dominate, intimidate and bully teams who were not right up for the fight – thankfully for us, all of our boys very much WERE up for it and eventually, class shone through.

However – Important point to be made here: In that first 30 minutes when we were up against it and Evans was up to his usual tricks, the crowd played an absolutely MASSIVE part in turning things around. On the pitch, the lads showed Evans they weren’t going to stand for his cr4p and just as importantly, the fans in every stand got into it and made it a right bearpit of an atmosphere. It was brilliant – and it seemed obvious to me that Evans and his players were adversely affected by it, just as our players loved it.

That is the kind of atmosphere we need to generate every week to help the lads and now that we’ve shown that we can do it, let’s make sure it’s the norm rather than the exception.

Spot on post, I sometimes wonder what it takes, other than a great league position and good football to create this, but more importantly why it never seems to sink in among the fanbase that in times of adversity, either in a singular period in any given match, or over an extended period of games in a not too successful season, that this intensity and vocal support from the fans is of paramount importance.

Avo - its not rocket science - its much easier for fans to get behind the team when things are going well and there is a united front to want to overcome all the nausous spoiling tactics of a team such as Crawley - its much harder to be enthusiastic when performances such as those under Wilson & Hart at the latter end of the season are so dire. Admittedly that is ultimately when the fans need to be most vocal but it never happens - primarily because the diappointment performance level overcomes any attempt to raise spirits. That was evident last night - I know there were only 300 Crawley voices but at 3-0 they didn't make a squeak which to use your analogy is the time when they should have been heard most.

I have also sent a letter of complaint to the FA this morning - I will let you know if I receive a reply. It runs along the same lines as redjet (above) but questions their victimisation. Have sent copy to Jeremy Wray and urge anyone else to do the same, as they are keeping a file.

From someone that does not sit in the arkells, I have to say that on numerous occasions this season the arkells stand have been clearly heard in full voice! Well done to them. Of course, it helps when you have something to sing about, and that has been in plentiful supply this season. It's when times are not so great that our support disappoints me.
LOL fair enough, as you say it's not rocket science, but all the more important. However at 3-0 down, it's kind of a lost cause!! There's just a slight difference in that than in the point I was trying to make Malky.
.
Funnily enough, if/when we find ourselves 3-0 or worse away from home, you can usually still here our support. Away support has and it seems always will be top notch.

Last season when we played the Creepies at home, an awful game played on a bitterly cold night, with Evans in full flow and Waffin'Wilson with arms folded we were a rabble. We huffed and puffed and seemed lost with nowhere to go. No direction, no purpose, no ambition and the rot had set in, and that game mapped out our future for the rest of last season.

What a long way we have come since then, we have said YES to unity, team order, fitness, endeavour, skill, try-try-try again and NEVER give up, A whole new world compared to the boozy-bars-stewards who ran this club into the ground last season . Thank God for Wray, Watkins and PDC.

Not sure what generation you are last Step, but think you might be in a minority with not wanting "glad all over" played after a goal for us is scored. The song was a big part of my informative years and everyone had to have the Dr Kildare shirts Dave Clarke group had us all wearing and we all thought we were cool!

I remember going to a dance hall in Cheltenham which was on the first floor and when everyone stamped their feet to that song the floor was swaying like we were experiencing an earthquake, great times.

No wonder our players celebrated their goals right in front of the Creepy bench and Evans was furious and waving his arms at the Ref. How on earth Paolo can be singled out when others get away with that circus last night is beyond me. And the fat boy accused us of bringing the circus to town when we played up there. How pathetic were the Creepy fans and a massive 246 for a team doing so well in the Division was embarrassing. But then so was that circus on the touchline and Billy Bunter Evans.

On a serious note though, I did hear a whisper that the Crawley owners are becoming less than happy with the FBG and his antics. Can't imagine the LMA would be falling over themselves to interject if he were sacked :)

Oh such chagrin over the use of the wrong vowel - still we all know who it is eh whether is U or O?
...but it's disrespectful. His name is not Paul o is it melkim?
Riff get over it some of our posters have trouble spelling period - its not because they are disrespectful -they simply can't spell to start with!
You post a blinding post (above this one) then in true jock fashion you knock the very people who are the backbone of our club, you may be able to spell jock but do you think that makes you a better man than others who cant? i`ll answer that for you shall i, NA yoo aint, some very successful people i know cant read or write but they have a shed full of cash and very few worries, what about you Jock? from what i can make out you don't need to spell good to pour beer in the brunel rooms or hump married women. So jock where has your ability to spell better than others got you?
Steve - A long and varied career and the ability for prospective employers to gauge that I can communicate the written word in a business like manner. I didn't mean to upset anyone re their spelling competence - the point I was trying to make to Riff was exactly that - i.e. what does it matter if one or two don't always spell PDC's name correctly. He saw it as disrespectful and he is fully entitled to express that view, I saw it as storm in a teacup and not worth worrying about it - that's all.
