Mayo and Young eye up the title

IT WILL be an emotional night for promoter Keith Mayo when Kelvin Young fights for the Southern Area Super Middleweight title against Paul Morby at the Oasis on March 23.

The 24-year-old takes on Portsmouth’s Paul Morby for the vacant title in the main event of a show promoted by Mayo, who sponsored Young when he was only 12-years-old at Penhill Amateur Boxing Club.

Since turning professional in 2009 Young has won 10 of his 11 fights under the stewardship of Mayo, who will be a proud man when he takes to the Oasis ring.

“Kelvin is a dream to manage and promote, he trains pretty much every day and is out running all of the time too,” he told the Advertiser.

“He has worked very hard and a couple of years ago I just didn’t think we would have got this far with him so quickly.

“He has proved that he is getting better all the time. It is strange to think that 13 years ago I was sponsoring this young 12-year-old lad at Penhill, and now here he is fighting for a Southern Area title. It is terrific.”

Young will be the third Swindon boxer to fight for a Southern Area title after both Peter Neal and Ricky Porter both previously claimed the Welterweight crown, but will be the first to do so on home soil.

The main event will form part of an exciting show which will also see Steve Mullins looking to continue his impressive run of victories since returning from a six year absense from the ring.

Chris Higgs, Mike Biggs, Daza Usher and Mike Rose will also fight on the night, with all five still awaiting their opponants.

There will also be debuts for Todd Roberts and Swindon’s Lawrence Bennett, the latter having a promising career in athletics before turning his attentions to the ring.
