Swindon boxer Young to fight for Southern Area crown

KELVIN Young is confident he can handle the step up in class when he bids to win the Southern Area super-middleweight title in what is the biggest fight of his career.

The Swindon boxer will face Portsmouth’s Paul Morby for the vacant title at the Oasis Leisure Centre on March 23, having fought the majority of his 11 professional fights at middleweight.

The 24-year-old goes into the bout having won the International Masters title as a middleweight in his last outing at the Oasis in October, and is confident of adding another belt to his collection.

“I cannot wait because this is the biggest night of my boxing career so far,” he told the Advertiser.

“I am stepping up to fight a natural super-middleweight and he is a former Southern Area champion so it will be tough, but I am really looking forward to it.

“The title was there and I just felt I had to go for it.

“I am comfortable there (at super-middleweight) and I have had a couple of fights there before.

“The International Masters title is a good title, but this one is something different and would be a real honour to have.

“It is well-known and has some great people fighting for it so it is important.”

The former Penhill amateur has yet to record a knockout victory in his young career, but is not concerned about his perceived lack of firepower.

“I don’t look to go in there and knock anybody out, I am a stylish boxer and that is my style and the way I go about things,” he said.

“If the knockout comes then that would be great, but I will not be overly worried about it.

“I have added a lot of strength work into my training and that will be important I think, especially stepping up a weight like this.

“He is a stronger heavier guy naturally, but I will have some extra weight too, and hopefully I will carry my speed up a weight and that will be a big factor in the fight.”
