Town close in on deal for midfielder despite change of manager at Tottenham

Town close in on deal for midfielder despite change of manager at Tottenham
PAOLO Di Canio has revealed that Swindon Town are making progress in their attempts to bring Tottenham’s John Bostock to the County Ground, insisting the recent change of manager at White Hart Lane has not hampered the Robins’ chances of landing the midfielder on a long-term loan.
Bostock impressed Di Canio during a six-week stay with Town towards the back end of last season, and the Italian has stressed throughout the summer that he would be keen to bring him back to Wiltshire for the upcoming League One campaign.
Spurs recently replaced boss Harry Redknapp with ex-Chelsea chief Andre Villas-Boas, leading some to believe any potential deal for the former Crystal Palace youngster could be on the rocks.
But Di Canio emphasised that that is not the case, and he went as far as to suggest Swindon are actually closing in on a deal for the 20-year-old.
“We are waiting because they changed their manager. Now Villas-Boas is to sign but normally it’s the club that decides,” he said.
“The responsible man for the academy (Tim Sherwood), I played many times against him and he is a good guy and I spoke to him and I’m still in contact with him.
“Apparently we made a step forward, apparently, but there is nothing on paper. We have to wait and obviously if we have a chance then I would have him.”
One of the major draws of signing Bostock, in Di Canio’s eyes, is his versatility.
Town have been operating a 4-4-2 system for the majority of Di Canio’s reign, but the Swindon boss said having the Spurs starlet available to him would mean he could tinker with his formation.
“He gives me an extra option more than everyone up front, to play with a different system during the season,” he said.
“This season we will maintain our identity, which is 4-2-4 when we’re attacking and then we can play with 4-4-2. But during the game I’d like to integrate into the system another way to attack and to defend, for example 4-3-1-2.
“I hope he can come but obviously I don’t want him just for this because he can play as a second striker. I convinced him last year to play two or three games second striker and he did very well.
“The only negative thing is that he couldn’t join us now. That would have been very good for him because he was a bit heavy last year. With us he should have a fantastic physical condition.
“He’s very young, he’s full of energy, he’s a powerful guy – you can imagine with three or four kilos less and fast pace he would be a very good player in League One.”

I personally think we need another GK as with 7 subs there will be one on the bench every week and if Foderingham was sent off or injured i'm not sure Bedwell will be ready (yet).

If Fods got injured in the warm up and we were away at the likes of Sheff Utd not sure if Bedwell is ready to step up to the plate.
If we can get Bostock in and another keeper.......then we are ready.

Bostock was MOTM by a country mile and the team were exceptional that day

He showed plenty of upper body strength in that game holding players off with ease
.
What he needed was to learn positional awareness and timing and direction of runs - as PdC was bellowing at him all the time about this
.
That's not a criticism as it is a new position so expected - but if he joins post Italy he will still have plenty of time to have that drilled into him
.
He'll just have to do some extra running to catch up with the rest of the lads

I seem to remember that someone posted, this time last year, that he was half-way decent in goal (or was it gaol?).

if we sign Bostock which i think we will, our squad should be complete. Bedwell is highly thought of at the club and am sure he can and will step up to plate if needed or required. In all areas of pitch we have at least 2 players for each position and could field 2 completly different teams as shown in the friendly the other day. i feel both teams could compete well in league 1 on their own.

Robfm_is_wrong_becauRobfin, No your not the only one, thought the same myself. Don't think anyone would disagree that McCormick has been a good keeper before his criminal offence. Sooner or later he will and should be able to play again, maybe for the moment is not the right time as there is too much controvery and it's best for all concerned he just continues with his rehab.

On another thought I did read somewhere our Italian goalkeeper coach is still up to it for div 1, so maybe we could register him as extra cover to Bedwell for the time being

If I have a concern with him, I think he needs to add some goals to his portfolio to go with his ability to provide the assist. Think with a bit more confidence and luck he could have actually have scored 2 or 3 that day.
If as we all hope, he comes here, think it'll be the bench to start with, but expect him when fit to make an impact when his chance comes.

I just feel sometimes that young lads are written-off by us fans simply because they are young. Maybe we should judge them when they have played a few times. After all Wes is only a couple of years older.
Paolo may consider him adequate cover. He has been kept on while Mark Scott, who has made an impression on loan (admittedly in lower leagues), has moved on.
I would also hate to see another talented lad from the youth team leave without being able show what he is capable of.

Would like to see him play in some first to see if he is up to it. Maybe JPT and some friendlies or loans.
Yes you could argue Charlie Austin coming straight in and thus if he is good enough then maybe he is ready. Keepers though are unique and one off positions. If he came in and made a mistake I would hate our fans to be on his back.
These are the only reasons. However if PDC states he is excellent, mature and ready then that would be good enough for me.
I still think he will get another keeper in for cover.

A good example is the keeper that played for Port Vale at the promotion party. He was young, made a few mistakes and played in his debut (I think) at the County Ground in a 6-0 defeat about 4 seasons ago. However they stuck with him and he is now their No1.
He is not as good as Wes and he must hate the CG but none of the goals were down to errors on his part.
We all have to start somewhere so if Paolo doesn't sign another keeper he must believe in Bedwell and I applaud that.
