Town close in on deal for midfielder despite change of manager at Tottenham

Swindon Advertiser: Town close in on deal for midfielder despite change of manager at Tottenham Town close in on deal for midfielder despite change of manager at Tottenham

PAOLO Di Canio has revealed that Swindon Town are making progress in their attempts to bring Tottenham’s John Bostock to the County Ground, insisting the recent change of manager at White Hart Lane has not hampered the Robins’ chances of landing the midfielder on a long-term loan.

Bostock impressed Di Canio during a six-week stay with Town towards the back end of last season, and the Italian has stressed throughout the summer that he would be keen to bring him back to Wiltshire for the upcoming League One campaign.

Spurs recently replaced boss Harry Redknapp with ex-Chelsea chief Andre Villas-Boas, leading some to believe any potential deal for the former Crystal Palace youngster could be on the rocks.

But Di Canio emphasised that that is not the case, and he went as far as to suggest Swindon are actually closing in on a deal for the 20-year-old.

“We are waiting because they changed their manager. Now Villas-Boas is to sign but normally it’s the club that decides,” he said.

“The responsible man for the academy (Tim Sherwood), I played many times against him and he is a good guy and I spoke to him and I’m still in contact with him.

“Apparently we made a step forward, apparently, but there is nothing on paper. We have to wait and obviously if we have a chance then I would have him.”

One of the major draws of signing Bostock, in Di Canio’s eyes, is his versatility.

Town have been operating a 4-4-2 system for the majority of Di Canio’s reign, but the Swindon boss said having the Spurs starlet available to him would mean he could tinker with his formation.

“He gives me an extra option more than everyone up front, to play with a different system during the season,” he said.

“This season we will maintain our identity, which is 4-2-4 when we’re attacking and then we can play with 4-4-2. But during the game I’d like to integrate into the system another way to attack and to defend, for example 4-3-1-2.

“I hope he can come but obviously I don’t want him just for this because he can play as a second striker. I convinced him last year to play two or three games second striker and he did very well.

“The only negative thing is that he couldn’t join us now. That would have been very good for him because he was a bit heavy last year. With us he should have a fantastic physical condition.

“He’s very young, he’s full of energy, he’s a powerful guy – you can imagine with three or four kilos less and fast pace he would be a very good player in League One.”

That would be absolutely fantastic. I hope to be there for three games in September and two more in late October. Would be fabulous to see him as part of the team. If he signs, what an off-season this has been.

when you list the team like this it looks very well balanced, with good quality, and about the right size. And with regards to your other post, how can Richard Wright say he's not settling in after just 1 week?! that is absolutely ridiculous. Imagine if some of our new boys said after this italy trip that they're a bit homesick so will be leaving the club!

Richard Wright said he was struggling to settle away from his family in East Anglia, so I doubt a move to Swindon is any better for him. Also, I don't want a player who bottles it after a weeks training!
I personally think we need another GK as with 7 subs there will be one on the bench every week and if Foderingham was sent off or injured i'm not sure Bedwell will be ready (yet).

With you here. No way will we not go into the season without another keeper.
If Fods got injured in the warm up and we were away at the likes of Sheff Utd not sure if Bedwell is ready to step up to the plate.

Some of the European giants were keeping tabs on him before he went to spurs, including Barce.

Stratton Red - no way is Bostock lightweight in fact at Gillingham away he was the only player that showed some strength and as has already been said against Port Vale he was strong and powerful as well as skillful and he would be a great assett to the squad. As for Sheff Wed fans saying he was a waste of space they have to bear in mind they had hoof ball Megson in charge at the time and that is not Bostocks game he needs to play in a team that play the ball on the deck like us so i take no notice of those northern chimps.

John Bostock looked poor at Wembley, but after a few weeks of Paolo's fitness regime he looked absolute class against Port Vale, and I hope he signs for us.
Also, we definitely need an experienced deputy goalkeeper to cover any injury or suspension to Fodders, especially as we are now back to the sensible 7 subs situation.

I thought that Risser was supposed to be an emergency 'keeper.
I seem to remember that someone posted, this time last year, that he was half-way decent in goal (or was it gaol?).

In all areas of pitch we have at least 2 players for each position and could field 2 completly different teams as shown in the friendly the other day. i feel both teams could compete well in league 1 on their own.

Fodders Bedwell

Both teams look really strong especially the 4 strikers. PDC is building whats looks like a very competitive squad with all players capable of making and staying in first XI

Robfin, No your not the only one, thought the same myself. Don't think anyone would disagree that McCormick has been a good keeper before his criminal offence. Sooner or later he will and should be able to play again, maybe for the moment is not the right time as there is too much controvery and it's best for all concerned he just continues with his rehab.

On another thought I did read somewhere our Italian goalkeeper coach is still up to it for div 1, so maybe we could register him as extra cover to Bedwell for the time being

Agree LR he was MotM against PV, based on that showing I really hope he returns to the CG, especially as Magera is no longer with us, we need a player able to sit just behind the target or fox in the box striker and link up with the midfield.

If I have a concern with him, I think he needs to add some goals to his portfolio to go with his ability to provide the assist. Think with a bit more confidence and luck he could have actually have scored 2 or 3 that day.

If as we all hope, he comes here, think it'll be the bench to start with, but expect him when fit to make an impact when his chance comes.

i dont think anyone can judge Bostock in the JPT final the bloke was only on for 10 minutes and it was his first time in a red shirt he played well at Gillingham and was probably our only player who did and he is very quick with both feet and strong and he will learn more under Paolo than going to clubs like he has done in the past ie Sheff Weds with someone like Megson in charge when he was there. He has played under some poor managers out on loan and i think this is his big opportunity to improve his game with us with Paolo at the helm as Ritchie said last season Paolo has improved his game and i know it was L2 but Ritchie did play well last season so if we get Bostock i think it will be a major bonues for us as he can be quite versatile as well playing in midfield or as a second striker or sitting in the hole behind the strikers with a free role. I would imagine if we get him Paolo will use him in various positions depending who were playing.
i dont think anyone can judge Bostock in the JPT final the bloke was only on for 10 minutes and it was his first time in a red shirt he played well at Gillingham and was probably our only player who did and he is very quick with both feet and strong and he will learn more under Paolo than going to clubs like he has done in the past ie Sheff Weds with someone like Megson in charge when he was there. With you here. No way will we not go into the season without another keeper. If Fods got injured in the warm up and we were away at the likes of Sheff Utd not sure if Bedwell is ready to step up to the plate. If we can get Bostock in and another keeper.......then we are ready.
Duke,

When will Bedwell be ready to step up ?

I just feel sometimes that young lads are written-off by us fans simply because they are young. Maybe we should judge them when they have played a few times. After all Wes is only a couple of years older.

Paolo may consider him adequate cover. He has been kept on while Mark Scott, who has made an impression on loan (admittedly in lower leagues), has moved on.

I would also hate to see another talented lad from the youth team leave without being able show what he is capable of.

Only playing James, as it goes i would like to see Rooney up the anti and push himself to produce (consistently) the level that PDC and others (including myself) think he is capable of, fingers crossed eh.

Good point. I am only coming from the angle that he has not featured in any competitive football league games.
Would like to see him play in some first to see if he is up to it. Maybe JPT and some friendlies or loans.
Yes you could argue Charlie Austin coming straight in and thus if he is good enough then maybe he is ready. Keepers though are unique and one off positions. If he came in and made a mistake I would hate our fans to be on his back.
These are the only reasons. However if PDC states he is excellent, mature and ready then that would be good enough for me.
I still think he will get another keeper in for cover.

Great news on Bostock, the squad is looking really balanced. I would like to see another keeper, however with Bedwell, Risser (In an emergency) and the emergency loan system I won't be getting stressed if we don't get one in.

Can't argue with your reply though I would say that sometimes young players should be cut a bit of slack early in their careers, especially goalkeepers.

A good example is the keeper that played for Port Vale at the promotion party. He was young, made a few mistakes and played in his debut (I think) at the County Ground in a 6-0 defeat about 4 seasons ago. However they stuck with him and he is now their No1.

He is not as good as Wes and he must hate the CG but none of the goals were down to errors on his part.

We all have to start somewhere so if Paolo doesn't sign another keeper he must believe in Bedwell and I applaud that.

bostock will be a good signing to bolster midfield (not striker) as not convinced miller will be anything more than a bit part player from what Ive read so an extra midfield player is definitely needed with smith and cox on there way out.
Also not having a moan here we look strong, but I do think we could do with at least 1 more good striker before the season starts, as we only have three, unless storey is counted as being a striker.
