DARTS: New arrows spur Tweddell to success

A NEW set of darts proved the catalyst for a magnificent week for young Swindon darts star Jack Tweddell.

The youngster secured his place in the Winmau World Masters in Hull in October after winning through a qualifying tournament in Bristol two weeks ago, but topped that achievement seven days later as he claimed victory in the BDO Youth Festival after beating fellow Wiltshire player Craig Cox in the final in Blackpool.

Tweddell’s successes came almost immediately after trading in his old darts for a set of world champion Adrian Lewis’ latest barrels, and the results were instant.

The 17-year-old was convinced his good recent form would soon bring success, but believes his new darts played a significant part.

“I was so happy to win the event, because I think I played well all day,” he said.

“I have been doing well recently and I thought something like this might have been coming, so to get the win was great.

“I decided to change my darts to Adrian Lewis’ new ones, and they are really good.

“I played with them for the first time in Bristol and I managed to qualify, but because I got the new darts it meant I was motivated to practise more which has really helped me.

“The BDO win was probably the best I have had, and it is right up there with my best achievement with getting to the final of the Gold Cup.”

Both Tweddell and Cox made the last 16 of the Young Players Challenge the following day in Blackpool while Josh McCarthy lost in the first round, and the trio were part of the Wiltshire team which beat Grampian and Lancashire 4-1 before losing 3-2 to Sussex in the final of the British Team Knockout Cup.

But Tweddell is now focused on succeeding in Hull, and is hopeful of improving on his quarter final appearance last year.

“Hull is the big one now, and it is great to be there,” he said.

“I got to the quarters last year and now I want to go better, and I am confident I can do it.”
