SWINDON TOWN: Wray delighted with Villa draw
6:00am Thursday 27th September 2012 in Local By Sam Morshead
SWINDON Town’s reward for reaching the fourth round of the Capital One Cup is a plum home tie with Premier League outfit Aston Villa.
The Robins were drawn to face Paul Lambert’s team last night after seeing off Burnley in round three on Tuesday, and will hoping to claim their fourth successive giant-killing in the competition this year, having already beaten Brighton, Stoke and the Clarets, when the two teams meet next month.
Swindon chairman Jeremy Wray was delighted with the draw.
He told the Advertiser: “Firstly, I hope tht Sky recognise it’s one of the ties of the round, you’ve got a big club in Aston Villa and an up and coming club in ourselves.
“There’s a real potential for an upset and it’s one of the stand-out ties of the round from that perspective.
“There’s the two big-hitters playing each other in Chelsea and Manchester United, but other than that it is probably the most attractive.
“Financially, you would hope for a packed County Ground and there’s also the potential for TV money as well.
“If ever there was an example to show just how far this club has come, looking at the draw with those 16 teams in it and seeing Swindon there is it.
“There’s 12 Premier League teams, a handful of Championship teams and it’s just ourselves and Bradford representing the lower leagues and I got a real buzz out of that.
“I know secretly Paolo wants to win this competition. Roll on the week of October 29.”

Lets forget about Charlie Austin, Oxford etc and get a trophy in the cabinet! Obviously we want to go up as well. Great to see this great club has got its pride and ambition back! Btw we beat Burnley in 1969 to.

Can anyone remember the last time we played Villa?
The last time we took anything from a game with Villa was the 87/88 season with a 0-0 draw at the County Ground in the 2nd Division. It was still a good day for Villa though as they won promotion that day, finishing 2nd to Millwall.

I remember the FA Cup match against Villa on T.V, not Sky so I guess ITV. I was at Uni in norwich and was the only one in the Students Union that afternoon with any interest in it. It's a great tie because its actually more probable against Villa to get something from the game than one of the Big 5.

As JW says it's a good marker of how far the club has come. I'm sure we'll put up more of a fight than in that anti climax FA cup tie. (Don't think Paolo does anti climax??)
Meanwhile the Shrews game will be another marker of how far the team has come, by keeping on track after the excitement of another famous cup win.

.
Under the competition rules a certain percentage has to be given to away fans (of which a set number have to be covered)
.
So it's up to Villa if they want the full allocation or not
.
Wigan chose not - so home fans got it - but Villa are bigger and Birmingham is closer so they may well take it
.
Behind the "Big 5" this is probably the best draw - the TV revenue and exposure would be great but you know it won't be us on the box

This is a very winnable game for us, Villa have been indifferent this season so far.
We'll take Spurs in the quarters, Liverpool in the Semi and Man U in the final. :-)
I think sky will go for Sunderland v Boro , that will be deemed a bigger attraction than us unless you're a Town fan of course.

The names have been picked out of the hat, or whatever it is they do to indicate the next matches to be played in the League Cup, and Aston Villa have been paired up with Swindon Town. That's right, after having to face Manchester City in the last round -- and beating them oh so handsomely (there's just no limit on the number of times we can reinforce that point) -- the Villa will now travel to Swindon for a what should be an easy match against a League One side. The round is scheduled for the week of October 29.
Let's all remember, too, that this match will involve Paolo Di Canio. If you thought Roberto Mancini's choice words against Paul Lambert were funny, well, be sure you're paying attention to Di Canio in the run-up to this match. He is, shall we put it, slightly insane. Unfortunately, he's also known for his side's ability to upset the higher-ups. It would be just the luck of Villa to dominate City away and then contrive to lose to Swindon.
.
I'm sorry - but PdC is rarely disrespctful to opposition managers and usualy is in response to them attacking him
.
Like he did with Howe - I expect him to praise Lambert as a young manager who likes to play the game right

Great draw as like many have already said, it is very winnable, the game will come in between a home game v Norwich (Lambert will enjoy that one) and an away trip to Sunderland.
..
You'd expect them to be focusing on the Premier League game v Sunderland as that is one of those they need to win - they really won't fancy a trip to the County Ground.....and given Lambert's success rate to date it could be a "You're getting sacked in the morning!" chant night.....if he lasts that long.

Was so gutted went with a mate to the next match Grimsby away which was one of if not the worst nil nil I've ever witnessed. All part of what makes these times so special.
The 5 nil at Villa when some kid wanted protection money to look after my car. Dear oh dear. Didn't pay him and would have murdered him if he'd touched it after that defeat!
For what it's worth I'm assuming they show two games and I think ours will be the Tuesday night game. I'll be there so not bothered - they can always show us in the next round hopefully.
As Den says will be one heck of a game, Lambert is a very very good manager but he's often played reserves when at Norwich, so fingers crossed he makes the same mistake.

As for today - If the Villan had said we have been handed a very favourable draw as we head to league 1 opposition rather than Man U - then fair enough - its true!
.
Its the easy game comment and the last line - us to c0ck up (like we have no say!)
.
Had we got Bradford at Home - I would expect us to go through but wouldn't describe it as an easy game and for us to c0ck up
.
Also I was mainly refering to the comments about PdC and saying if you think Manchini was bad wait until you hear PdC
.
Yes he is insane and makes bizarre comments about driving the bus and his little chickens - but he has never been disrespectful to another manager in a build up (even his relatiation dig at Evans wasn't that disrespectful)
.
So why did he suggest he would be - because he is Italian? Let's not even open that can of worms!
.
Finally - I never named a single club when I said cr@ppy little clubs - so hard to affend anyone - when other put clubs names in that was THEIR views of them - NOT MINE!

And finally Cyril - love PDC's quote- "If we keep going, we will have lots of smiles this season and maybe at the end a big laugh" - and finally finally isn't the leg/foot wave from the dugout to the Town End absolute loveable Latin madness!!

SAPF let's see on who's on the telly. Totally agree about Chelski Utd but just have a sneaky that Paolo is box office and they may go for it. If it was Boro at home I would have agreed but then I'm not a tv exec!
Changing the topic slightly interesting to see highlights that it was Nathan who couldn't get the right side of Charlie for his goal. Note to everyone he's not perfect....... yet......!!!!!!
PS when the prediction league results for Burnley game, finally entered and got score correct so might not be bottom any more!

I read it as "it looks like an easy game on the face of it but PDC has shown that he can mastermind cup upsets..." And the other PDC stuff - he was saying that Mancini's comments were funny and PDC's are likely to be even funnier. I didn't find it offensive or disrespectful at all - just quite entertaining. Perhaps it's all a question of interpretation.
Den - first off - I did respond to you about transfers yesterday if you haven't seen it - I got the wrong end of the stick - so sorry about that
As for today - If the Villan had said we have been handed a very favourable draw as we head to league 1 opposition rather than Man U - then fair enough - its true!

So why did he suggest he would be - because he is Italian? Let's not even open that can of worms!

Finally - I never named a single club when I said cr@ppy little clubs - so hard to affend anyone - when other put clubs names in that was THEIR views of them - NOT MINE!

Having said that there was no issue getting Wigan tickets even a day or so before the game by all accounts (although it more or less sold out in the end) and that was on a Saturday - only difference I can imagine will be the Villa fans probably selling out more of their allocation. We'll need to offer them around 2000-2500 to satisfy the cup requirements. Midweek game, would expect them to bring at least 1500, possibly the whole lot. That will still leave around 12,000 available home seats - even though it's a big game, for a Tuesday night I reckon there'll be no major issue getting tickets.
Can't normally make it back for the midweek ones (away games always seem to be closer) but will be there for this - drive down, game, drive straight back, should be home before midnight. No beer though unfortunately :-( But hopefully heading back with a smile on my face!

It's not up to is if we give them the bank or not
I thought it was just 10% of the ground, and the bank more than covers this amount.

Probably very true, but it made me laugh. The only time I've been to Villa Park was a formal reception in the Holt Suite, and very nice it was to.
In fairness to Ellis he kept them debt free, a right rum pig-headed so and so according to many, but it was a club full of good assets when he sold it to Lerner, who I think is still learning about football in the Prem.

One to ponder, "what if" Deadly Doug Ellis had appointed Canioman as one of his many managers years ago. Interesting I think.

Meanwhile try and recognise that real people that have real friends who may actually support another team, and when those two teams meet it is only natural for them to meet up/have a beer/claim the bragging rights and afterwards shake hands until the next time without beating the cr@p out of them to use your rather juvenile language. Do us and the club a massive favour- turn the other cheek (oh that's the cheek on your face by the way) because not only will you bring the club you allege to support into disrepute but you'll probably ensure a fine from the Football League/FA.
The only plus side would be that hopefully you'd receive a football banning order and the County Ground would once again be a safer place for everybody without your yobbish presence.
Also, football hooliganism has never gone away, it just moved out of the stadiums and into the surrounding streets as a result of CCTV.

I would be annoyed if season ticket holders could buy five seats each, bring four Villa fans and keep town fans out though.
Anywhere I've been watching football I've had a chat with supporters of the other side, found some common ground a laugh. A bloke at Pompey had it right when I commented on how friendly they were, me thinking they were a "boisterous" lot. He said, if you come looking for trouble, you'll have it. If you come to watch football and have a laugh, you'll get that too. The reception you have (generally) depends on how you conduct yourself.

Some say its a tricky tie and beware, but the majority seem to think that it's a nailed on win for them. Beat City, will stuff the Town.
Think again. We are a tough nut to crack and, I think, getting tougher.
Whether Burnley underestimated us, I don't know. They supposedly studied all our players and tactics. They started brightly, but after Benno's effort, had no answer.
If Villa are serious about the cup and put up a good team then, yes they probably will get the result.
On the other hand, don't underestimate how seriously Di Canio is taking this Cup. He WILL do his homework and he WILL have strategy to neutralise them. In the end we feel that we have a great chance with this tie, but if we lose, then so be it. If Villa lose, they will be so devistated it will be shameful.

Anyway, they are on the whole optimistic... but cautously so.
I personally think that we have this in the bag and Villa will be "the next scalp".
Funnily enough I have a soft spot for the Villians... 24 years ago we played them on the last day of the season and that was the day I got married... only match I missed that year...
Anyway, I was on honeymoon in Malaysia the next week and the match highlights were shown in full... my new Mrs was not happy.... but just getting to see the reds draw 0-0 with the Villa from 7,000 miles away was for me.... PRICELESS :-)
