SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio reacts to bookmakers' Bolton link
6:00am Thursday 11th October 2012 in Local By Sam Morshead
Paolo Di Canio
PAOLO Di Canio was pleased to see his name amongst a number of bookmakers’ runners for the vacant Bolton Wanderers manager’s job, but only because it highlights the achievements of his Swindon Town side over the past 16 months.
Di Canio is getting used to the speculation that has hounded him during his brief and hugely successful period with the Robins.
The Italian has been linked to positions at Swansea and West Ham prior to suggestions the Trotters could look to him to replace the sacked Owen Coyle, while one bookie has offered odds of as low as 16/1 that he could be the next boss at the Reebok Stadium.
Unperturbed, and after stressing that no contact had been made by Bolton, Di Canio emphasised his commitment to Swindon.
But he did accept that being tipped as a potential successor to Coyle was a welcome break to some of the negative press he has received in recent weeks.
He said: “If you read that there’s interest in you, what do you think? That people who bet money put me second or third, what do you think? That I’m happy?
“It’s better than not reading your name but because a person who doesn’t know football in general or doesn’t connect with my club can have news that someone is interested in you can’t make me completely happy.
“It doesn’t come from sports people or people who are involved in football. But reading your name is more positive.
“In the last few months I have read my name only for bad things so I prefer it, but it doesn’t change me or any feeling.
“We can joke and we can have fun but it doesn’t change my spirit, my feeling - I am working for Swindon and there is no need to think about it for one second.
“Nobody has said it from another club or from my club.
“Before I signed for Swindon there was my name for West Ham as the second chance. Nobody contacted me but for an instant my name is there.
“Obviously it is better (than not being there) because it means that people who are not involved straight away with the clubs think already I have done a good job.
“Maybe they read the statistics and see there is Di Canio who has won nine games of 15 already, even this year.
“Including last year it’s more than 61 per cent victories. I hope we can extend it because it means we are doing well.
“It’s a short career, maybe 67 games, but there are some who have 67 and have 15 per cent or 20 per cent and stay at the same level.
“It means that they look at the people who have good results and that is something you appreciate.”

It will be interesting to see if he can put his skills to good use with the 3 injuries we have,Feel he will overcome this problem and let's hope he can do a good job.
As to the embargo again we are awaiting the outcome of JW's meeting with the Board.Again they have said backing could be mad available if neccessary.
Looking forward to him getting a result against Villa that would put a few$$$$ in the coffers

2 solid seasons with excellent results will improve confidence in him.
I very much doubt that Bolton would have the resources or patience that PDC would need to stop that ship sinking. (They're even worse than City).
Add to that they wouldn't be able to add any new players until January, besides loan players.
If we keep grinding out results here, we could be a division above them next year.

BBC: What do you think of being quoted by a bookie for the Bolton job?
.
PDC: It's better to be recognised than not but I've got a job to do here at Swindon.
.
There is no suggestion of any interest from Bolton and no suggestion that PDC wants to go anywhere. End of non-story.

This article is not news at all. PDC gets quoted by bookies - not even anywhere near favourite - for a job, and the media make it some big story. The BBC have even made a mountain of it, presumably because it was their interview. Distill it down to the basics and this is what you get:

And I agree that after 16 months at the helm it you would think that Town fans would be able to spell his name correctly. It’s not Paulo, Palolo or Palulo. Nor is it Paulo De Canno. No … get the name right please.
What I can’t stand is people making out to be something he’s not.
Now, alternatives are great. PdC, or PDC are more than acceptable.
Gaffer, Boss, or Sir, all ok. He could also be known as Football Legend, Genius, God, though, by his own admission, he says he is not, but I have my doubts.
Some might even call him the Messiah.
He probably is all of the above, but he’s no super hero.
I just can’t see him flying around dressed in his green jacket, a cape trailing behind him, Beanie on his head and Ray-Ban Wayfarers on, as he directs breath-taking super-human tricks with the ball. All are powerless before him as he gesticulates with his arms and fixes you rigid with his stare.
Is the name for our superhero Footy Boy? No. SuperStriker maybe? No. Not even Rockin’ RoMan.
No. As bold as you like, standing there with legs astride, hands on hips, on his chest inside a round red shield, are the golden letters .. CM

As for Paolo, I think that he knows that he is on a good thing at Swindon. accommodating and skillful Board, a springboard for his media eccentricity and an opportunity to play with his footballing passions.
It will take a bigger fish to tweak his ego.
In any case, to quote a favourite poster, 'it's onwards and upwards' with or without Paolo. Malpas is not the only alternative?

Canioman and his Italian sidekick Don the Belly, being sharp suited, gun toting, good guys who take no prisoners. fast cars, fast women, supremely fit, and only drinking red wine and eating pasta by the plate full.
Avengers for the good and poor, vanquishing the rich and evil.
Canioman endorsing posh clothes ,mens smellies and certain brands of Italian cars. Of course there is then the Canioman fitness studios around the country for the supremely fit, and of course the glossy month magazine called , Rant and Rage, the only way.

All just speculation at the moment, but can you see Paolo working with Phil Gartside? That would be a marriage made in hell.
The good thing about di Canio being a bit of a loose cannon is that whilst the fans of a club might love him the board would be slightly wary of working with such an emotional character. This could possibly rule him out of ever managing at the very highest level.
