ONLY Lee Peacock has the versatile qualities Paul Sturrock craves in a squad and the Town boss is now scouring the market in a bid to to strengthen his utility' options.

The County Ground boss feels he has a shortage of players equipped to manage a number of different roles and he admits that one of his targets is a utility' player.

Sturrock feels Peacock, pictured , is the only member of his current squad to stand out on that front.

The manager is delighted to have the 30-year-old available as a striker and a midfielder but look a couple of years down the line and we could be talking about defender' Lee Peacock.

Sturrock said: "A change is as good as a rest.

"I think he's revelling in having a freshness in his positional play and he's done very very well for us in the last couple of games.

"In fact I would say he could be the star performer over the last few games."

Not that Peacock's on field journey' is over. Far from it.

Sturrock said: "I still think there's two positions he can try and that's right back and centre half.

"When he gets to 32 I think he could revert back to those positions and I'm not kidding about that.

"I think he could be an unbelievable centre back and a very, very good rampaging full back.

"But at the moment we'll just send him back 10 or 15 yards rather than the 50!"

Players are inevitably tagged as a defender, midfielder or striker but it is those who can fit comfortably in any category that Sturrock really treasures.

The Town boss said: "You need utility players.

"They are the most important part of your football club and I don't think we've got enough of them.

"At most of the clubs I managed I had three boys that you could rely on to play steady eddie' football in four or five positions.

"Lee is the only one so far that has slapped me in the face in terms of being able to do that.

"That's one of the kind of players I'd like to bring to the club."

As for signing players, Sturrock is still struggling to get his head around the frenzy' that the January window seems to trigger.

He said: "I think the window is now working out to be a complete waste of time for the lower leagues.

"It might be invaluable to the Premiership but for those of us that can still take loans I think it's a bit of a nonsense.

"It's amazing how many people get excited about this month and all of a sudden bring in three or four new faces.

"It's hard enough to gel a team together at the start of the season when you have five or six new faces and so to do it in January is very, very difficult.

"However, we do need that wee freshness and wee jolt from one or two new faces."
