WILTSHIRE Youths came close to capturing a prize scalp in the inter-county championship.

They were pipped at the post by league leaders Glamorgan in their last home game of the season at the Moonrakers.

Despite leading the Welsh county 7-5 going into the last set of matches in the boys under 21 section they were eventually beaten 9-8.

Glamorgan, who topped the Southern Division One section in all three categories, were rocked back on their heels in the opening under 18s section.

Wiltshire were flying high after a good win against Herefordshire the previous month but trailed the opener 2-1 with only Kyle Murdoch tasting success.

Then Aaron Dunne (man of match), who averaged an incredible 29.47, Dean Tilling and Matty Aubrey pushed Wiltshire 4-2 ahead.

Glamorgan won the seventh game but wins for Richard North, to keep his unbeaten record going, and Luke Little sealed a superb 6-3 win.

The Ladies Under 21s were not so fortunate and Stephanie Richell was the only winner in the three matches, taking the overall score to 7-5 in Wiltshire's favour.

Dan Butler began the Under 21 boys section in fine style with a 3-1 win over Glamorgan's Cliff Williams to put Wiltshire on the brink of overall success.

They needed just one more win from the last four to cause a major upset.

However, Shaun Higginson was beaten in the deciding fifth leg before Wiltshire suffered two easy 3-0 losses.

It was all down to the last match where young star Tony Clark, a regular this year in the Wiltshire senior B side, dipped out in the deciding leg as the Welsh grabbed a last-gasp victory.

Despite this loss, WIltshire have won four of their nine matches to date.

Their 10th and final match is away to Shropshire on Sunday, May 27.
