JAKE Goodwin was surprised to have taken the Adver’s Young Sportsman of the Year gong ahead of Swindon Town starlet Louis Thompson, but he wasn’t about to complain.

Goodwin’s form last season with the bat and the ball for Swindon Cricket Club landed him with a Hampshire Academy contract and selection for South West England in 2013. The young all-rounder beat off competition from Town’s Wales Under 19 international midfielder as well as boxing sensations Patrick and Jimmy McDonagh to land the award and he was thoroughly surprised by the result of the public vote.

“I thought Louis was going to get this because of the achievements he got, playing for Swindon Town’s first team. It’s very surprising but pleasing as well,” he said.

“Hampshire was a pleasure, just receiving that (contract) meant a lot to me. Just being able to go down there twice a week, training, using their facilities.

“Mum, dad, coaches, friends, everyone supports me really. It’s just amazing.

“It’s an absolute pleasure. I never expected it really. I worked so hard and it’s paid off. I’d like to thank everyone who’s supported me, it’s just amazing.

“I’d like to say thank you so much to the people who voted for me, it means so much.”

A big year beckons for Goodwin, as he tries to forge a career in the sport, but he’s pledged to make sure he turns out for his hometown club as frequently as he possible can as Swindon return to the West of England Premier League Glos/Wilts Division.

“Hopefully for the rest of the year I can play with the Hampshire Academy at a high level but also play for my club,” he said.

“That’s a pleasure for me as well because it’s my club, it’s where I’ve learnt the game and it means a lot to me.”
