YOUNG Sportswoman of the Year Jordan O’Donoghue reckons many of Walcot ABC’s male boxers are scared of getting in the same ring as her, for fear of being hit too hard.
O’Donoghue saw off the challenge of golfing starlet Katie Warren, equestrian talent Jess Mendoza and rhythmic gymnast Laura Halford to win the prize at the Advertiser Sports Awards on Thursday night and then said she aspired to become an Olympic boxer in the future.
The Golden Girls champion is certainly confident enough to make the grade, saying of her fellow members at Walcot gym: “There’s just me and an older girl down there at the moment.
“None of them (the boys) like to spar with me, I hit them quite hard.”
O’Donoghue’s victory in the Swedish Golden Girls tournament was one of several successes for Walcot ABC in 2013 and she relished the opportunity to pit her wits overseas.
Now she’s targeting further international glory.
“It was brilliant.
“It was a really great challenge at the Golden Girls, it was abroad and a great experience,” she said.
“I’ve recently won the English Championships so maybe now I can go onto the Three Nations.”
Of winning the Adver's prize, she said: “I feel brilliant.
“I didn’t expect this."
