Centenary celebrations for Worlebury Club

WORLEBURY Golf Club are determined to make their Centenary Year a tremendous success and have produced a well-illustrated publication to highlight the activities.
There is also a section on the club's history and a series of events have been arranged, including special matches. There is a Centenary Ball on June 21.
But the highlight will be the playing of the Centenary Cup, if only for the magnificent new trophy as the culmination of the "Open" competitions week.
The special celebration takes place in July with a week of competitions culminating in the Saturday event open to all club members who will compete for the magnificent Centenary Porcelain Trophy, donated to the club by an anonymous benefactor.
An appropriate replica will be presented to the winner(s) as the trophy will remain on permanent show in the display case which will shortly be mounted on the wall in the entrance corridor to the clubhouse.
Brian Evans, well known as a Somerset county administrator, is the president this year.
He said: "One hundred years is quite a milestone for a small club like ours. The course has undergone many changes, many conifer trees were planted to define holes and fairways but are now being gradually replaced by more aesthetic "trees of the hill" which are maturing and improving the overall outline of the course.
"We now have both a clubhouse and course that all of us who are members at Worlebury can be proud of.
"President Robert Rogers is chairman of the centenary committee that held its first meeting in April 2006. He joined the club in 1985 and has served on the executive from 1997, was captain in 1999 and president in 2005-6.
Every member will have the chance to take part in one or more of the planned events and hopefully will look back on 2008 as a year to remember.
Steve Rowlands is the centenary captain. Jill Phillips is the Ladies Captain. Cicely Johnson is researching the club's history for the Centenary Book which will be published in 2009.
Secretary Mike Wake, who was also a member of the centenary committee, has recently moved on to become secretary of Cardiff club St Mellons. Brian Evans and the committee are looking after the administration for the time being.
