THE Devon PGA staged a successful ladies-only pro-am that attracted 30 teams at Exeter Golf and Country Club and raised £2,500 for his ladies club captain Chris Quantick's charity on a day she jointly organised with home pro Gary Milne.
On a day of impressive scoring Exeter touring professional Chris Gill shot seven-under-par 62 to beat the unlucky Robin Goodey (Teignmouth) by a shot.
Gill felt the work he has done recently on his putting contributed to his win.
He has returned to a putting grip which he used as a youngster. He hit 16 greens in regulation, missed only one fairway and took 24 putts.
Goodey, who has regained some of his best form over the last few months, puts the success down to a more relaxed attitude on the course, and concentrating on maintaining his height through impact.
He said: "It's unusual to shoot 63 on a tough day and not win, but it just shows the standard of golf being played in the county at the moment."
Barry Austin (Downes Crediton) shot 69 which seemed like a good score until the other two players reached the clubhouse.
In the team event Iain Parker from Royal North Devon won with a very strong team which included ladies county stars, Julia Norman, Georgina Snow and the up and coming Lucy Greenberry.
Second: -9 Mark Taylor (Exeter), Viv Worthington, Kathy McBain, Sian Clarke.
Third: -8 Robin Goodey (Teignmouth), Sandra Shaw, Diana Dick, Pru Russell.
