NEW Swindon Town hero Jon Obika admits that the Tottenham Hotspur connection at the County Ground helped make him a fan even before his deadline day move.

The 24-year-old striker marked his debut for the Robins with a first-half double at Bradford City on Saturday to secure a fantastic three points.

But the forward, who spent just over two months on loan at SN1 back at the start of 2011, says that he already knew about Swindon’s passing style of football.

“Before I came here I was like a fan,” the hitman told the Advertiser.

“Because I know Yaser Kasim, Nathan Byrne and obviously Ryan Mason and Alex Pritchard you become a fan first.

“It is a very young squad (here), we have got a few experienced players, I feel that the style of play I really enjoy.”

Despite his last spell at Swindon being a fruitless one, Obika could have been forgiven if he had felt that an away day debut was just what he would have wanted.

“Not really,” he said when asked if there was less pressure on making his debut away from home.

“I was just buzzing, whether it was home or a away.

“The fans were fantastic today and I’m sure that they will be buzzing at the County Ground on Tuesday.

“I got a great reception, the team were buzzing from the reception and that is what drove us forward.”

Obika’s first goal for Town came in the 23rd minute when he headed home Michael Smith’s cushioned header following a Brad Smith corner.

The second came 20 minutes later when he pounced on a half cleared Byrne corner.

“Smudge did well back stick and I anticipated the ball and the second goal was more like a reaction,” he said.

“You always want to have a good debut and perform well and I chipped in with some goals today.”

Obika also praised how Swindon defended at Bradford as the hosts laid siege to the Robins goal in the dying stages of the match.

“It was a great team performance,” he said. “We defended well as a team, right from Wes to Smudge and me up top, it was a great performance.

“In League One football you know that the opposition that you are going to come against are going to be very physical, you have to match them and then you will see our quality on the pitch.”
