PETERBOROUGH boss Darren Ferguson believes the league is wide open this season as he prepares his side to take on Swindon this weekend.

Unlike previous seasons where teams like Wolves have run away with the league, Ferguson expects this season to go right to the wire with the most consistent team coming out on top.

With the opening of a new 2,500-seater stand and the return of the prodigal son Aaron McLean this Saturday the Posh boss is hoping for an electric atmosphere at London Road when they welcome Swindon.

“The new stand is opening it’s an exciting time, hopefully we get as many supporters at the ground as we need, we need as many as we can get,” he said.

“Even if he doesn’t start, Aaron coming back will give a buzz around the place.

“(We have) two great games. Obviously we have to take care of the first one first (against Swindon), a team that are playing very well. A good footballing team and these are the games I want at the moment.

“We have got to step up and make sure we get a performance and if we can, I keep saying it week in week out it’s about us getting consistent performances and if we get them I know we can win games.

“I think it is very much a league this season that anyone that is really consistent has a good chance.

“Obviously Bristol have been the most consistent up until now but they lost their unbeaten record to Swindon, ourselves we were right up there and we lost a few games, Preston have lost three on the bounce.

“Preston play Bristol City on Saturday and that is going to go one way, it might be a draw you don’t know.

“Teams will drop points and I really don’t believe from what I have seen so far, I might be wrong, that there are any Wolves or Brentford’s this season, I really don’t.”

The teams should know each other well after meeting a total of four times last season with honours shared in the league and Posh just sneaking it on penalties in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Area Final.

However Swindon head into the game full of confidence having won three of their last four league games and keeping three clean sheets in the process.

Posh on the other hand have slipped out of the play-off positions having not won a game in their last four and head into the weekend without key striker and the League One Young Player of the month Marcus Maddison, who misses the game with a knee injury.

“We’re playing against a team that are confident, in form, so it will be a tough game and we hope it will be a tough game for them as well,” added Ferguson.

“They have added a little bit, two centre halves, Obika they added and he seems to have found his home there and he is playing well.

“They are a team that gel well, that know each other’s roles well as we are so it will be a good game.

“I fully expect both teams to be there or there abouts come the end of the season and I think Saturday will be similar to the games last season, very tight.”
