SWINDON Town supporters’ representatives have criticised the pricing of the League One play-off final for not giving a fair deal to fans.

More than 30,000 fans from Swindon and a similar amount from Preston will be descending on Wembley on May 24 to see which of their sides can achieve the dream of promotion to the Championship.

The prices for the final were announced after Town’s dramatic 7-6 aggregate win over Sheffield United on Monday night. The cheapest full-price ticket comes in at £30, with the best seats topping £85 once booking fees and postage have been added on.

A family of four could be looking at a spend of over £240 before they have even considered travel and food.

In light of this both Swindon Town fan groups, the Supporters’ Club and TrustSTFC have criticised the prices.

“It’s a bit of a shame it’s costing so much, because it’s not just the cost of the ticket, a hotdog will probably cost you £5, as well as the travel,” said Roger Bunce, chairman of the Supporters’ Club.

“Those prices are set by the authorities but there is not much Swindon can do about it.

“Unfortunately it’s the way football is going. When I used to take my three boys I could afford it, but now when I look at it I couldn’t afford to take three or four kids.”

Swindon Town stand to make between £800,000 and £1 million for making it to the home of English football, receiving 25 per cent of the gate receipts.

However, the prices for the finals are set by the Football League, with the clubs largely dictated to in this regard.

“I think it’s a problem at the highest level of football,” said Trust chair Steve Mytton.

“It’s extortionate and a shame, if you look at what we’re doing with the club it’s all about getting young fans through and families back in there.

“For the whole family to go to these types of events it is a lot money, some people won’t be able to afford it and will have to watch it on TV.”

The Football League insist their prices are consistent and reflect the significance of the game.

A spokesman said: “Ticket prices for the League One Play-Off Final have been held at the same price for the third consecutive season and reflect both the importance of the match and the stadium it is being played in.

“The League offers a range of pricing options starting at £30 for adults with half price concessions available to under 16’s and OAPs for all price categories.”
