LOUIS Thompson’s dream of a final Swindon Town appearance at Wembley appears to be receding, with the midfielder seemingly unlikely to be fit to return for the League One play-off final next weekend.

The midfielder - loaned back to Town this season after being bought by Norwich - has been out of action since undergoing surgery following the dislocating shoulder he suffered in the draw at Crewe on February 28.

Thompson, the brother of club captain Nathan, came through the ranks at the County Ground before joining the Canaries on the final day of the summer transfer window, immediately returning to Town for one last season.

He will head to Carrow Road on a full-time basis at the end of the current campaign but has always maintained his desire to pull on a Robins shirt again.

Town have also held out hope that Thompson could return to play a part in the play-offs while Norwich boss Alex Neil said he had no issues about the player featuring for Town, providing the injury had healed sufficiently.

However, it is believed that the 20-year-old is fighting a losing battle to make his comeback in the final against Preston on May 24.

Although Thompson has undertaken work in the gym and been pictured with the Town squad on matchdays in recent weeks, the Adver understands he has yet to return to full training.

With the crunch promotion clash now just 10 days away, it appears doubtful that Thompson will make Mark Cooper’s squad for Wembley.

Brother Nathan is rated ‘touch and go’ for Town's date with destiny after suffering a hamstring tear in Monday’s play-off semi-final second leg against Sheffield United at the County Ground.
