ON LOAN midfielder John Swift is “desperate” to play at Wembley as he faces a race to be fit for Swindon’s play-off final.

The Chelsea player missed last week’s 5-5 draw with Sheffield United with a calf strain and has been back at the Premier League club’s Cobham training centre undergoing treatment to ensure he is available for selection against Preston.

The 19-year-old returned to light running on Friday and has been receiving massages on the troublesome area as both clubs work together to get him back to full fitness.

The final decision on whether he is fit to play will be made jointly by both Swindon and Chelsea, but his agent, Barry Wilson, has said that Swift will be doing all he can to be ready.

“He has been up at the club (Chelsea) since Wednesday and he has been having work on his calf and it is coming along nicely,” Wilson told the Advertiser.

“The recuperation will continue on Monday and Tuesday and then we should know more by then.

“Swindon have been speaking with Chelsea and he has been given all the treatment that he needs. It will be a decision made by both clubs.”

Swift is expected to be called up by England for the Toulon Tournament, the annual under 20 international competition held in France, at the end of the month.

Despite that, Swift is not likely to dodge the play-off final in order to save himself and is keen to finish his time off in Wiltshire by helping Swindon into the Championship.

“He is desperate to play in the final,” added Wilson.

“He wants to be back and part of the squad for the play-off final and help Swindon into the Championship.

“He has thoroughly enjoyed his time at the club and the fans.

“He gets on well with all of the staff and the management team and I think he wants to be part of the team at Wembley to end his time with Swindon the right way.

“He said that after the game on Monday, it was difficult when he had to go up in his tracksuit with the other players.

“He felt slightly out of it because he wasn’t a part of the team. I hope he is there on Sunday to play some part in the final.”
