ON the 30th anniversary of Swindon Town's Premier League promotion courtesy of a thrilling 4-3 victory over Leicester City in the Division One play-off final at Wembley, Adver Sport digs into its archive to find an interview with one of the heroes of the day - Martin Ling.

WE ALL know it was a humdinger of a game and the memories are very sweet, but sometimes it’s difficult to take the day in as a player.

A lot of the memoires go back to the build-up and the game actually becomes a bit of a blur.

I think a lot of the play-off games are lost prior to the game. They are played between the ears and it’s about having players not freeze on the day.

A couple of the lads had played at Wembley a few years before and with Glenn Hoddle, Wembley was like his second home, but for most of us, it was our first game at Wembley.

From the semi to the final, it was a big gap. In that time, Glenn took us away and relaxed us because that Wembley game is always in the back of your mind in all the training you do.

And Glenn was also very selective about who did the press stuff. That was important because the game can be lost in the build-up if you get too involved in what it actually means.

I felt my most comfortable once the game kicked off because then I was doing something I’d done all my life.

It was a game of football, and whether there are 70,000 people in the crowd or 70, I’d done it an awful lot of times before, even if it was my first Wembley appearance.

I was in a situation I fully understood as we played a certain way and we’d done it for two years under Glenn.

All the razzmatazz that goes before it is great but you have to be careful you don’t get caught up in it.

We played really well, but everyone expected that when Leicester got the equaliser there would only be one winner, but we actually took over the game again.

Hoddle shares key reason behind Town's historic victory over Leicester.

'It wasn't a dive - I wasn't good at conning the referee'

When their third goal went in, they were elated and we were deflated but Glenn just said 'stick to our principles and it will come good', and it did.

They had a good 15 minutes and scored three goals in that time, but if you look at the whole game, we were always the better side.

I got a bout of cramp just as the final whistle went and everyone was running and jumping on each other but I was in absolute agony. It was a good job it didn’t go to extra-time as I was probably shot by then.

Then seconds after the final whistle went, I was in agony, but once the elation of going up the steps and being named man of the match sunk in, the celebrations in the dressing room afterwards was a magicical place to be.
