NATHAN Thompson is Swindon Town’s biggest doubt for Sunday’s play-off final, but has not given up the dream of leading his side out at Wembley.

The captain is sweating over a grade two hamstring tear, but at the start of the week appeared bullish about his chances of playing.

Thompson has twice been to Wembley with Town, but was not in the squad on either occasion for reasons of inexperience and injury respectively.

With the serious concern of Sunday making a trio of watching briefs, Thompson is clinging on to his chance of taking the field.

“It would be incredible to lead the team out and it is something I have dreamed of since I was a kid coming through the youth set up at 12 years old,” said Thompson.

“It is a massive feeling to even wear the captain’s armband, but to lead the team out in front of 60,000 fans would be an incredible feeling and one I’ll certainly savour if I’m given the opportunity.

“Both times I’ve been previously to Wembley I’ve not been in the matchday squad, which is a bit of a bittersweet feeling getting there but not actually being involved, so to lead this team out would be a proud moment.”

Whether or not he makes it Thompson wants his side to leave nothing on the field as they chase the Championship dream.

“There have been 48 games and this season comes down to one 90 minutes,” he added.

“Preston were in a similar sort of situation only a couple of weeks ago and we saw how that ended, so they’ll be making sure they don’t follow suit again.

“It’s up to us to make sure we’re the one’s victorious at the end of the game. We’re confident going into it and it’s been an extremely vibrant atmosphere in the dressing room the last couple of weeks and everyone is raring to go.”
