FORMER Town captain Darren Ward may turn 37 this September, but he insists he will still be playing when he’s 40.

The veteran defender prides himself on his professionalism, conditioning and diet, which he believes will allow him to extend his playing career beyond his 20th season.

Ward is now looking for a new club, but after a loan spell at Crawley where he pleased himself and others, suitors should be forthcoming.

Ward clearly still has an appetite for the game and for making the most out of his playing time.

Speaking to the Advertiser he made it abundantly clear he could well be returning to the County Ground with another League One club next term.

“I’ve said for many years now I’d like to play until I’m 40,” he said.

“I know that sounds a little bit old, but I’ve worked on a number of different things with an aim to reach that and I fully intend to do it.

“I still want to play football.

“I really want to get the most out of my career because I’ve worked hard for it and you are a long-time retired.

“I love playing football I really do. I love the game, love the training and love playing. I really want to keep that going.

“If I don’t do that then there’s no harm in setting the target and if I go beyond it even better. I am looking to play for as long as I can.

“I have always tried to be a model professional on and off the pitch. I’m a logical guy and I set high standards, I don’t stop, I’m relentless.

“I get up early and go to bed as late as I can because I like to get the most of everything I do.”
