SCUNTHORPE are thought to be lining up a move for former Swindon Town striker Andy Williams after reports emerged he underwent a medical with the League One club yesterday.

BBC Sport Humberside broke the news yesterday and, although the club have yet to comment on it, the Adver understand that talks are at an advanced stage but the forward is currently on holiday.

The 28-year-old finished with an impressive 22-goals for the Robins last season but was released by the club at the beginning of this month.

Williams looked set for a move to Sheffield United after the play-off final but with Nigel Clough losing his job at Bramall Lane that deal looks like it is dead in the water.

Meanwhile, recently released defender Darren Ward could be set for a quick reunion with Crawley Town after new Broadfield Stadium boss Mark Yates admitted that he is in talks with the 36-year-old.

Veteran Ward spent the second half of last season on loan at Crawley and was let go by Town at the beginning of this month following the expiration of his contract.

“I’ve spoken to Darren’s agent a couple of times and we are in contact,” Yates told the Crawley News.

“It’s something I have to weigh up. I don’t want to go into specifics on people because it’s not really fair but Darren is a player that I know that did really well here.

“I have to evaluate what I would get out of him and whether he fits into what I want to do.

“I know Darren is a good player and a decent chap, and I’ve spoken to his agent a couple of times. Is it the route I’m going down? I don’t know.

“I want some experience but do I want someone who is mobile, aggressive? Not that Darren isn’t, but I have to weigh these things up.”
